Bereish*t: Why Was G-d Sad in His Heart?

At the end of the parsha the Torah says vayitatzev el libo, G-d was saddened in His heart. Does G-d have a heart? The Alter Rebbe teaches that the heart is Malchut, the place where knowledge has to land, and that true simcha is knowing a treasure is stored for you even when you cannot see it.

The repair comes through one person, Noach. What is one choice you can make this year that rises above the limits of your own heart?

October 7 changed us. How do we carry its memory into the way we live?

Take 16 minutes to pause, breathe, and remember those we lost. Join Rabbi Amichai in a guided meditation to reconnect with one another and the life we have been given.

First shared in October 2024, offered again today.

B"H

Today marks three years since October 7. We remember where we were that day, what happened, and everything that has followed. In many ways, we are still within it.

The Torah constantly reminds us to remember. Life goes on. The day to day takes over, and we can slowly lose touch with what once felt so clear. Zachor asks us to give that memory a place in our lives.

For me, remembering October 7 includes the pain and the atrocities, and also the unity that followed. It means remembering the love for one another and the spirit within us that rose up, and asking how we can remain connected to that today.

I recorded a short reflection on remembrance, faith, and remembering who we are.

May Hashem bring us out of our personal and collective galut into complete geulah. 🤍

Why does the simplest of the four species get the spotlight on the last day of Sukkot? 🌿

The willow has no taste and no smell. No Torah to point to, no good deeds to count. Its only virtue is that it is part of the community. And on Hoshana Rabbah, the Great Salvation, that is the one we lift up.

The willow grows by the water. Its branches move together in the wind. That is the secret of the whole holiday: coherence, flow and togetherness, with ourselves and with each other.

I recorded a short teaching for today. Twelve minutes. Listen with an open heart.

Chag Sameach. May we all be sealed for good 🙏

Surrounded by Light: a guided meditation for Sukkot.

During Sukkot we leave our permanent home and enter a temporary dwelling. Life changes. Our feelings change. So much of what occupies our minds is passing. And yet, here we are.

In this meditation we settle the body and the breath, return to the heart, and sit within the clouds of glory that surround the sukkah. There is no perfect state you need to arrive in. Allow about fifteen minutes, in your sukkah if you can.

Hoshana Rabbah, the last day of Sukkot, the Great Salvation.

On this day the simplest of the four species, the willow, takes the primary focus. It grows by a stream of water and moves with the wind, every branch in step with the others. That is what Sukkot is about: holding the I and the collective together.

As Hoshana Rabbah arrives, ask yourself what practice will keep you connected after the holidays. Tehillim in the morning, davening with more intention, a little more learning, one more mitzvah.

And give tzedakah every day, even a few coins before you pray. Giving opens the channel to receive.

Tzaddik has the value of ninety, and Pirkei Avot teaches that at ninety we bend. Real maturity is the ability to bow without collapsing.

If we fight every battle, we will not have the strength to stay on the tree. Choosing our battles takes humility, and humility keeps us connected.

A palm tree grows its branches and then keeps growing past them. We go through phases too. We finish something and think, I am done.

But a tzaddik keeps going to the next level. There is no retirement from what you are called to do. Tzaddik katamar yifrach, the righteous one flourishes like a palm tree.
