The DOD is required by law to provide, at a minimum, a two-person honor guard for the funeral of any eligible veteran. This basic service includes the ceremonial folding and presenting of the American flag to the next of kin and the playing of taps, a poignant bugle call that serves as a farewell to the deceased veteran.
