The Battle of Belmont, fought on November 7, 1861, in southeastern Missouri, marked the first combat test for many Union troops, including several regiments from Iowa. Among them, the 7th Iowa Infantry, commanded by Colonel Jacob G. Lauman, played a key role in the engagement under Brigadier General Ulysses S. Grant. Grant’s objective was to strike the Confederate camp at Belmont, opposite the stronghold of Columbus, Kentucky, and to disrupt enemy movements along the Mississippi River.

The Iowans advanced bravely through difficult terrain, driving Confederate forces from their camp after intense fighting. Once the camp was captured, the soldiers, inexperienced and caught up in the thrill of victory, lost formation and began looting supplies. Confederate reinforcements soon arrived from across the river, forcing Grant’s men into a desperate retreat. The 7th Iowa helped cover the withdrawal under heavy fire, displaying notable discipline despite heavy casualties—losing nearly one-fifth of its men.

Although the battle ended in a tactical stalemate, it provided the Union with valuable experience and showcased the courage and resilience of Iowa’s soldiers during the early stages of the Civil War. The Iowans’ performance at Belmont earned them lasting recognition for their steadiness under fire and devotion to duty.
