Thank you all so much for attending my first fine arts class !! honestly had the BEST time creating, laughing, and spending the evening with all of you. Seeing everyone’s creativity come to life was so incredible, and I’m beyond grateful that you chose to spend your time painting with me! 🥹💚

There are SO many more classes and creative events to come, and I can’t wait to keep creating memories and bringing more fun art experiences to our community.

Thank you for supporting me, my art, and this little dream of mine. I appreciate every single one of you more than you know! 🫶🎨

Last Tuesday was one of those very full Tuesday Crew days at the historic Armstrong Brick Block. 🧱🛠️

The Crew was spread out and working in several directions at once with more restoration work on the bay windows, continued work along the Market Street storefronts, painting the gazebo at the Johnsonburg Legion and demo happening upstairs in the residential units above the Heritage-Education & Welcome Center. Little by little, another part of this 45,000-square-foot building moves forward.

And in the middle of all that activity, we had a visitor with a camera. 🎥

WTAJ News was here spending part of the day with us, filming a story about the restoration of the Armstrong Brick Block and the Tuesday Crew!

Of course, a Tuesday Crew day also means lunch around the big tables. And this one was really GOOD. 😋

A big thank-you to Maggie & Bella of Inked Garden Tattoo Parlor for the Subway platter, Scott Cherry for the pasta salad, and Maggie’s grandmother for the apple Danish sheet-pan dessert AND Yum Yum bars. You definitely kept this Crew fueled!

There is something pretty special about seeing the whole picture on a Tuesday with ladders up, sawdust flying, demolition happening upstairs, bay windows being worked on outside, lunch being shared around the table, and a television crew there to document it all.

This is what saving the Brick Block looks like.
Not all at once.
Not by one person.
But Tuesday after Tuesday. 🤎

Historic buildings don’t save themselves. People do.

Digging through the old pictures we have come to the conclusion that Mac is immortal; here he is providing water and lunch to the original workers way back in 1890, talk about dedication, let’s hear it for our very own water boy! 😂

As we get deeper into the revitalization of the historic Armstrong Brick Block building someone always mentions how they would have loved to see how they took on this building, wooden scaffolding, block and tackle lifts to stack the cut stone pillars, wagons with the original timber from our forest, cut stone from our very own hills, bricks manufactured right here in town, picture the horse drawn wagons bring in the materials needed, the sounds of hammers, the tradesmen talking.

I often say “no one knows the names of those tradesmen who built this building, the stonemasons, brick layers, plasters, carpenters, we know the name of the architect and we know who paid for it” a new legacy is being written by the dedicated volunteers, something they all should be proud of being part of.

The historic Armstrong Brick Block made the news! 🤎🧱

WTAJ stopped in Johnsonburg this week to spend some time with us inside and outside the historic 1890 Armstrong Brick Block, and their story is now live:
“Saving the Brick Block: Volunteers restoring historic Johnsonburg building”

There is something pretty special about seeing years of work, dust, dumpsters, scaffolding, paint, windows, scraped knuckles, Tuesday lunches and sheer determination condensed into a television story.

But what we love most is that the story is really about people.
The Tuesday Crew. Our volunteers. Our tenants. Our donors and funding partners. The people who bring lunch. The people who stop in and ask what they can do. The people who believed a 45,000-square-foot, 136-year-old building in downtown Johnsonburg was worth saving.

Because historic buildings don’t save themselves.
People do.

And we’re not finished yet. 🧱⚒️

🔎 ISO: Antique bookcase FOR the HEWC

We’re on the hunt for another beautiful old bookcase!
The glass-front bookcase pictured here has been on loan to the Heritage-Education & Welcome Center from a friend of the HEWC, and it has been the perfect home for our growing reference community library. Now we need to find one of our own.

📚 We love our little reference library. It continues to grow as books and resources find their way to the HEWC. This is the perfect collection where someone can pull a book from the shelf, sit for a while, research a bit of local history, learn something new, or simply discover something they didn’t know they were looking for.

So, we’re searching for an antique or vintage wooden bookcase, preferably with glass doors and roughly the same footprint as the one pictured so it will fit comfortably in this same spot.

Something with age, character and history would be perfect against the exposed brick and old wood of the historic Armstrong Brick Block. It certainly doesn't need to be perfect either. An old, well-loved and a little worn around the edges book shelf is just fine with us. ♡

🌱 NEW growth from original timber

Available now in the Shoppe at the Heritage-Education & Welcome Center are actual pieces of the historic Armstrong Brick Block.

These keepsakes were created from original true 2x4 hemlock wall studs removed during restoration of the building, timber cut from trees harvested from the surrounding hills of Johnsonburg and used by the craftsmen who built the Brick Block in 1890.

Each one is marked:

The old saw marks, cracks, weathering and nail holes are still there and some pieces even retain their original square nails.

A small piece of the 136-year-old Armstrong Brick Block that you can actually hold in your hands.
$25 donation, with proceeds going directly back into the restoration of the historic Armstrong Brick Block.

Old timber. New purpose. New Growth. 🌱
