WORLD TEACHERS’ DAY | WHAT DOES “TEACHER” REALLY MEAN?

A teacher is not only the person standing in front of a classroom.

Sometimes, a teacher is the person who sees a future in a child before that child can see it for themselves.

For StandBesideHer, this is what TEACHER means:

WORLD TEACHERS’ DAY | 5 OCTOBER 2026

Some children will never know what they are capable of… until a teacher tells them.

In many poor African communities, a teacher can be the first person to see beyond a child’s circumstances.

The first to notice creativity in the quiet child.
Leadership in the boy others have written off.
Brilliance in the girl who has never imagined life beyond her village.
Potential in the child who simply needed someone to say:

“I believe in you.”

A teacher does more than teach a lesson.

They can help a child discover a gift, build confidence, dream bigger, and understand that poverty, background, or limited resources do not have to define the future.

And many teachers do this while facing overcrowded classrooms, limited materials, heavy workloads, and communities carrying enormous challenges.

That is why this year’s World Teachers’ Day theme matters:

“Standing with teachers: 60 years of protecting the profession, advancing its status and shaping our futures.”

UNESCO reminds us that World Teachers’ Day is not only about celebrating teachers, but also about reflecting on the support they need to fully use their talent and vocation.

Today, we honor every teacher who has helped a child discover:

“I am capable.
I have something to offer.
My future can be bigger than my circumstances.”

To every teacher standing beside children and helping them rise thank you. ❤️

🌸 OCTOBER 4 | HER LIFE

DON’T JUST WEAR PINK. STAND BESIDE HER.

She notices something different.

A lump.
A change in shape.
Something about her breast that simply doesn’t feel normal.

But then life starts talking louder.

“Maybe it’s nothing.”
“I’m too busy.”
“I’m scared.”
“What if the news is bad?”
“Who will look after everyone if something happens to me?”

And sometimes the woman who spends her life caring for everybody else quietly puts herself last.

That is where standing beside her begins.

Not with a pink ribbon. But with a conversation.

“Have you had that checked?”
“Do you want me to come with you?”
“I’ll sit with the children.”
“I’ll drive you.”
“Whatever happens, you will not face it alone.”

🌸 Here is the truth we cannot scroll past:

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women globally. About 2.4 million women were diagnosed in 2024, and WHO stresses that recognizing unusual breast changes and seeking medical care promptly can support earlier diagnosis and treatment.

But awareness means very little if a woman still has to face fear, diagnosis or treatment alone.

WHO’s 2026 Breast Cancer Awareness Month message says:

“Every story is unique. Every journey matters.”

At StandBesideHer, we would add:

And no journey should be walked alone.

So this October, don’t only post pink.

🌸 Check in on her.
🌸 Encourage her not to ignore unusual changes.
🌸 Help remove the practical barriers that keep her from seeking care.
🌸 Listen without frightening her.
🌸 Stand beside her before, during and after the appointment.

And perhaps today, send one woman this simple message:

“Your life matters to me.”

Because HER LIFE is not just an October theme.

Her life matters every day.

What if this October, instead of asking women to be stronger…we became better at standing beside them?

Beside the girl fighting for her right to dream.

Beside the woman carrying responsibilities nobody sees.

Beside the mother who cares for everyone but is rarely asked,
“Who is caring for you?”

Beside the rural woman whose hands feed families and communities.

Beside the survivor finding her voice again.

Beside the older woman whose wisdom should never become invisible.

This October, StandBesideHer is following one truth:

Every stage of her life matters.

Her mental health matters.
Her physical health matters.
Her education matters.
Her safety matters.
Her work matters.
Her dreams matter.
Her story matters.

Across October, the world will pause for the girl child, rural women, mental health, breast cancer awareness, older persons, teachers, poverty, care and support.

But for us, these are not just international dates.

They are people.
They are mothers.
They are daughters.
They are sisters.
They are women we know.

So our question this month is simple:

WHO ARE YOU STANDING BESIDE?

Not tomorrow.

Not when her struggle becomes visible.

Today.

👣 Listen to her.
🤝 Walk with her.
📣 Amplify her voice.
🛡️ Protect her dignity.
🌱 Create room for her to grow.

October is HER LIFE. HER VOICE. HER FUTURE.

🇿🇼 ZIMBABWE’S YOUTH ARE NOT LAZY. MANY ARE TIRED OF KNOCKING ON DOORS THAT NEVER OPEN.

Study hard.
Then struggle to find a job.

Start a business.
But with what capital?

Stay away from drugs.
But who is addressing the hopelessness pushing some young people toward them?

Build your future.
While simply surviving today is already a battle.

This is the Zimbabwe many young people are navigating.

UNICEF reports that in 2025, 47.6% of Zimbabweans aged 15–24 were neither in education, employment nor training. Among young women, it was 53.2%. UNICEF Zimbabwe 2025 Annual Report

Behind those numbers are dreams waiting for somewhere to go.

And this is where StandBesideHer refuses to be silent.

We don’t want to simply tell young people:

“Be strong.”

We want to help build communities that EMPOWER them with skills and opportunities, PROTECT them from exploitation and harmful pressures, and TRANSFORM the conditions keeping their potential trapped.

Because encouragement without opportunity eventually becomes noise.

Zimbabwe cannot keep asking its youth to build the future while leaving them without the tools to build it.

WHO EXACTLY IS A YOUTH?

“At 18 they tell you: ‘You’re an adult now.’

At 25 they ask: ‘Why haven’t you made it yet?’
By 30 they ask: ‘What have you been doing with your life?’”

But somewhere between those questions is a generation trying to BECOME.

Trying to finish school.

Trying to get the first job that requires experience they haven’t been given a chance to gain.

Trying to start a business without capital.

Trying to pay rent while helping family.

Trying to build relationships.

Trying to survive comparison.

Trying to look successful online while quietly wondering:

“AM I FALLING BEHIND?”

So who is a youth?

For global statistics, the United Nations defines youth as ages 15–24, while acknowledging that definitions differ between countries and regions. (United Nations)

And those years can carry enormous pressure.

The ILO reports that global youth unemployment is 12.4% in 2026, while around 260 million young people are neither employed, in education nor training. (International Labour Organization)

And the struggle isn’t only financial.

WHO estimates 1 in 7 adolescents aged 10–19 experiences a mental health condition. (World Health Organization)

So perhaps we need to stop asking only:

“What have young people achieved?”

And start asking:

“WHAT ARE YOUNG PEOPLE TRYING TO SURVIVE WHILE WE EXPECT THEM TO SUCCEED?”

At StandBesideHer, we are not lowering expectations for young people.

We are asking families, communities, employers and leaders to understand the realities behind those expectations.

Challenge them—but mentor them.
Expect responsibility—but create opportunity.
Correct them—but don’t humiliate them.
Ask about their future—but ask about their wellbeing too.

Because youth is not simply an age.

It is one of life’s biggest bridges:

🌍 THE DAY AFTER YOUTH DAY…

“International Youth Day wasn’t created because young people needed another celebration.”

It was created because their issues needed the world’s attention.

And here’s something even more powerful:

The idea began with YOUNG PEOPLE.

In 1991, young people gathered at the UN World Youth Forum in Vienna and proposed the idea of an International Youth Day.

Seven years later, in 1998, ministers responsible for youth from around the world met in Lisbon, Portugal.

They recommended that 12 August become International Youth Day.
In 1999, the UN General Assembly made it official.
And on 12 August 2000, the world observed International Youth Day for the first time.

But here’s the part we shouldn’t lose beneath the hashtags and celebration photos:

International Youth Day was designed to bring attention to youth issues and youth participation not simply to tell young people how wonderful they are. The UN describes the observance as a way of bringing youth issues to international attention while celebrating young people’s potential as partners in society.

And 26 years after the first observance, the question is:

ARE WE LISTENING YET?

When young people talk about unemployment do we listen?

When they ask for education and opportunity do we listen?

When they bring solutions do we fund them?

When they challenge the way things have always been done do we invite them closer…
or tell them they’re too young to understand?

At StandBesideHer, our message after Youth Day is simple:

Don’t celebrate young people on August 12 and silence them on August 13.

Youth participation must survive the hashtag.

Listen to them.
Invest in them.
Create opportunities.
And let them help build the communities they will inherit.

WALK WITH HER WEDNESDAY YOUTH DAY 2026

“Her postcode should not decide how far her dream is allowed to travel.”

One girl wakes up with Wi-Fi.

Another walks kilometres to school.

One is choosing a university.

Another is fighting to remain in the classroom.

One is encouraged to lead.

Another is still being told what a girl shouldn’t become.

Different contexts.
Common aspirations.

She wants to learn.
She wants opportunities.
She wants her voice to matter.
She wants to decide what her future can become.

And she deserves people willing to walk beside her until opportunity catches up with her ambition.

That is what Walk With Her Wednesday means today.

Not speaking for young women.

Making room for them to speak.

Not deciding their future.

Giving them the tools and opportunity to build it.

Not telling girls they can become anything…

while leaving barriers in their way.

WALK WITH HER WEDNESDAY YOUTH DAY

“Different addresses. Different struggles. But millions of young people are asking the same question: WILL I GET A FAIR CHANCE?”

One is growing up in a rural village.

Another is navigating a crowded city.

One is searching for their first job.

Another has an idea that could transform their community but no one will open the door.

Their realities are different.

Their aspirations are not.

That is why the 2026 International Youth Day theme, “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations,” matters. The UN highlights young people’s shared hopes for dignity, opportunity, well-being, inclusion and a meaningful role in shaping their future. (United Nations Social Development)

And here is the uncomfortable truth:

We cannot keep calling young people “leaders of tomorrow” while refusing to trust them TODAY.

At StandBesideHer, youth empowerment must mean more than motivational words.

Give them ACCESS.

Open the door.
Share the opportunity.
Mentor the idea.
Recommend their name.
Listen when they speak.

And especially for young women and girls:

Don’t only tell her she can do it.
Help remove the barriers stopping her from doing it.

TODAY’S WALK WITH HER CHALLENGE

Before this day ends:

Tag one young person whose work deserves to be seen.
Share one opportunity with a young person.
Open one door you have the power to open.

Because sometimes someone’s future doesn’t need another speech.

It needs someone willing to say: “COME, THERE’S A SEAT FOR YOU HERE.”

Different contexts.
Common aspirations.
Equal dignity. Real opportunity.

“Your relationship ended. Why did your child have to choose a side?”

The marriage ended.
The relationship broke down.
The adults were hurt.

But somewhere in the middle stood a child who loved both of you.

Then came the questions:
“What did your mother say about me?”
“Tell your father I need the money.”
“After everything your mother did, you still want to see her?”
“If you loved me, you wouldn’t choose them.”

And without realizing it or sometimes while knowing exactly what we are doing we turn a child into a messenger, a spy, a referee, and eventually… a weapon.

That is too heavy for childhood.
Your child did not cause your breakup.

They are not responsible for healing your heartbreak.

And they should NEVER have to betray one parent to prove love for the other.

🧡 StandBesideHer Says:

Fight your adult battles with adults.

Protect your child from the battlefield.

The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child puts the best interests of the child at the center of decisions affecting children and recognizes children’s interests in maintaining relationships with both parents except where that would conflict with their best interests.

So even when love between adults ends…

parenthood does not.

And when contact with a parent is unsafe, protection not forced access must come first.

❤️ TODAY’S CHALLENGE

Before saying something negative about the other parent in front of your child, ask:

“Will these words solve our adult problem… or create a childhood wound?”

Because your ex may be part of your past.

But to your child, that person may still be Mum or Dad.
