Sum of Parts takes the stage May 15–16 at Nimbus Arts Center with a dynamic program of new and returning works that move through memory, identity, migration, and transformation.

This reel features glimpses of "Avenoir" by Yosh*to Sakuraba and "A Land, A Promise" by Princess Grace Award-winning choreographer Houston Thomas, set to original choral music by Saunder Choi. "A Land, A Promise" will be performed live with West Village Chorale. Costumes by Erica Johnston.

The evening also includes work by Pedro Ruiz and the return of "Through the Golden Door" an acclaimed work that reveals Nimbus' novel approach to hyperlocal dancemaking, created with bestselling author Helene Stapinski and eight longtime Jersey City residents and culturemakers: Mary Aiken, Sam Pesin, Ben Jones, Juan Cartagena, Tina Maneca, Catherine Hecht, Joe Waks, Danielle Scott.

📣 State Senator Raj Mukherji Announced as 2026 Nimbus Rose Gala Honorary Chair!

Senator Mukherji’s extraordinary work in public service since 2008 has been both diverse and multitudinous in Jersey City, in Hudson County, and across the State of New Jersey. As State Senator, Majority Whip of the State Assembly, Deputy Mayor, and Chairman and Commissioner of the Jersey City Housing Authority, Mr. Mukherji has enacted far-reaching legislation that has impacted access to healthcare, social justice and immigrants’ rights, paid sick leave, sustainability and climate justice, mass transit infrastructure, housing affordability, and many other spheres. He is a former Sergeant in the U.S. Marines who enlisted two weeks after September 11th at age 17 and served in military intelligence, as an adjunct law professor, and as a former local prosecutor and healthcare and technology CEO.

A longtime supporter of arts and culture and the author of the state law allowing communities to create voter-approved dedicated trust funds for the arts, Mr. Mukherji is a member of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG-AFTRA) and Actors’ Equity (AEA). Nimbus is proud to announce Senator Mukherji as the Honorary Gala Chair of the 2026 Nimbus Rose Gala.

A look back at a special moment from last season. ✨
Last year, Nimbus Dance took the stage at New Jersey Performing Arts Center alongside the New Jersey Symphony for the premiere of Firebird, performing live with the orchestra. The program also featured Dark Water.

Dancers moved on stage as the symphony played just behind them—an experience that filled the entire hall with energy and sound, and a powerful reminder of what happens when dance and live music come together.

We are proud to recognize Barbara M. Bickart, Senior Advisor, Arts & Culture at the New Jersey Economic Development Authority, as a 2026 honoree at the Nimbus Rose Gala.

Barbara has led one of the most significant public investments in the arts in New Jersey’s history. Through the A.R.T. 2 grant, $15 million was distributed to 39 organizations across the state—including Nimbus—bringing transformational support to urban communities most deeply impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The New Jersey Economic Development Authority recognizes that arts organizations are vital infrastructure: strengthening local economies, supporting the workforce, serving families, and helping reinvest in urban, transit-oriented communities.

For Barbara, the relationship between the arts and community is also deeply personal. An acclaimed interdisciplinary video artist whose work has been exhibited internationally, and an educator who has taught and lectured nationally, Barbara brings a deep understanding of artistic practice to her advocacy and policy leadership. A Jersey City resident for decades, she has collaborated with local cultural mainstays including Segunda Quimbamba and the Jersey City Museum.

We are deeply grateful for Barbara Bickart’s leadership in championing investment in New Jersey’s arts communities.
