Postpartum care in this country is failing mothers. And it’s getting worse for a growing number of women, those giving birth in their 40s, who are navigating new motherhood and perimenopause at the same time. Nobody is talking about that.
For fiscal year 2026, the federal government allocated over $20 million for maternal mental health programs. That’s great! To get some perspective 1 the war that we’re in costs $1–2 billion. Per day.
We have to do better.
More screenings. In-home checkups, the way other developed countries do it. Real paid parental leave. And screenings that go beyond a form you fill out in a waiting room while you’re exhausted and terrified of saying the wrong thing.
