Laurie didn’t just face breast cancer with courage. She faced it with compassion for the women who were fighting the same battle without the safety net of insurance, steady income, or financial stability.

That deep empathy fueled her purpose and is the reason she founded Saint Agatha Foundation: to ease the financial burden for breast cancer patients so they can focus on treatment, not bills.

Her mission continues every time we help a patient with their financial needs so they can access care with dignity, get the support they need, and keep up hope. 💗

Our Spring E-Newsletter is here: Celebrating a Season of Renewal 🌷

Spring is a season of new beginnings, and it feels like the perfect time to recommit to the mission our founder, Laurie Mezzalingua, set in motion: helping breast cancer patients across Central New York afford the costs associated with their illness.

In this issue, you’ll find:

💗 A warm welcome to our newest partner, Cancer Resource Center of the Finger Lakes, and their new program supporting patients with direct assistance, wigs, prostheses, custom garments, and comfort bags
🥊 The powerful story behind the woman who inspired our name, Saint Agatha, and how Laurie gave her pink boxing gloves as a symbol of strength and solidarity
🌟 A heartfelt thank you to the partners, donors, volunteers, and advocates who make this work possible.

May is Women’s Health Month!

This month is a great reminder to prioritize the preventive care that can save lives.

In 2026, the American Cancer Society estimates 321,910 women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer.
That number is a powerful reason to stay on top of screenings, know your risk factors, and encourage the women you love to do the same. Early detection can make all the difference.

At Saint Agatha Foundation, we’re here to support breast cancer patients across our region by easing the financial burden so patients can focus on treatment, not bills.

Happy National Nurses Week! 💗

We couldn’t let the week pass by without celebrating the nurses who show up with compassion and steady strength for breast cancer patients and their families every single day.

From explaining treatment options and answering late-night questions to offering reassurance in the infusion room, nurses are often the ones who make patients feel seen, safe, and supported when it matters most.

To every nurse in our partner hospitals and throughout our region, thank you for all you do! We’re grateful for you.

Laurie lived these words with her whole heart. Even while navigating breast cancer, she chose to live her life to the fullest, and found purpose in her diagnosis.

At Saint Agatha Foundation, we carry Laurie’s mission forward by supporting breast cancer patients with compassion and financial assistance, so they can focus on healing and enjoying the moments that make life truly rich.

We’re proud to welcome the Cancer Resource Center (CRC) as a new Saint Agatha Foundation partner! CRC’s mission is to create and sustain a compassionate community of support for people living with and affected by cancer, so no one has to face cancer alone.

Through our recent grant, CRC is launching CRC Breast Cancer Direct Access & Comfort, a program designed to support breast cancer patients with both practical and compassionate care, including:

💗 Financial assistance
💗 Access to properly fitted wigs
💗 Prostheses and custom-fit garments
💗 Comfort bags for patients in treatment and recovery

We’re grateful for CRC’s work in the Finger Lakes and honored to help expand support for breast cancer patients in the Ithaca area and beyond.

April is National Cancer Control Month, a reminder that fighting cancer takes more than treatment alone. It takes early detection, access to care, and support that continues through recovery.

For breast cancer, cancer control can include:

✅ Staying up to date on screenings and mammograms
✅ Knowing your personal and family risk factors
✅ Prioritizing healthy habits that support overall wellness
✅ Getting connected to resources if a diagnosis happens

At Saint Agatha Foundation, we’re committed to helping breast cancer patients across our region by providing financial assistance through our partner network. If you’re facing a diagnosis, learn how Saint Agatha may be able to help:

Even in the most difficult seasons, hope can still find its way in.

During her breast cancer journey, Laurie held tightly to faith, gratitude, and the choice to notice joy, even when life felt heavy. She had a true fighting spirit.

That spirit is woven into everything we do at Saint Agatha Foundation. We carry her legacy forward by surrounding breast cancer patients with support through financial assistance, so they can focus on healing, not worry about their bills, and hold onto those moments of joy along the way.
