📚 Pride History 101: Why Do We Celebrate Pride in June?

Pride Month is celebrated in June because it commemorates the Stonewall Uprising, a series of demonstrations that began on June 28, 1969, in New York City.

At a time when LGBTQ+ people faced widespread discrimination and harassment, members of the community stood together and demanded dignity, respect, and equal treatment. The events at Stonewall became a catalyst for the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement.

That's why Pride is more than a celebration. It's also a remembrance of those who fought for visibility, safety, and the right to live authentically.

As we celebrate this month, we honor the courage of those who paved the way and recommit ourselves to building a community where everyone is valued and respected.

☂️🌈 In Every Storm, We Shine 🌈☂️

Dubois County Pride is proud to once again partner with Jasper Arts to celebrate Pride Month through the power of community and creativity.

"In Every Storm, We Shine" is a collaborative art installation that reflects the resilience, creativity, and voices of our community. Featuring an eight-foot found-object umbrella created by local artist Curtis Uebelhor, an original soundscape engineered by Jasper Arts intern Jade Darding, and contributions from volunteers of all ages, this immersive exhibit is a testament to what we can create when we come together.

This project was built around a shared vision: fostering belonging, celebrating creative expression, and highlighting Dubois County as a welcoming place for all people. Every element of the installation represents the strength of community and the belief that even through life's storms, we can shine together.

The exhibit will remain on display through June 28.

We hope this installation inspires connection, conversation, and a sense of belonging for everyone who experiences it. ❤️🧡💛💚🩵💙💜

Join Dubois County Pride for a community gathering celebrating family, belonging, and the love that connects us.

Recently, Governor Mike Braun proclaimed June as “Nuclear Family Month” in Indiana. In response, we are creating a space that recognizes and affirms a simple truth: families come in many forms, and every family built on love, care, and commitment deserves to be seen, valued, and respected.

This gathering is not about division. It is about belonging.

At Dubois County Pride, we believe everyone deserves to feel welcomed, supported, and connected to their community. We invite families, friends, neighbors, and allies to come together in a spirit of love, acceptance, and understanding as we celebrate the people who support us, care for us, and help us thrive.

Bring a lawn chair, bring your loved ones, or simply bring yourself. No matter what your family looks like, who makes up your family, or how your family came together, you belong here.

At Dubois County Pride, we know that families come in many forms.

Families may be led by LGBTQIA+ parents. They may be single-parent households, blended families, grandparents raising grandchildren, adoptive families, foster families, chosen families, or households that look different from what some consider "traditional." What makes a family is not its structure—it is the love, care, support, and commitment shared between the people in it.

To every family in Dubois County and across Indiana who may feel unseen by conversations about what a family should look like: we see you. You belong. You matter.

Because love lives here.

It lives in the parents who encourage their children to be themselves. It lives in grandparents stepping in when they are needed. It lives in foster and adoptive families opening their hearts and homes. It lives in LGBTQIA+ families building lives together. It lives in chosen families who support one another through life's challenges and celebrations.

Our mission has always been to foster connection, build support systems, and create spaces where people can be fully themselves. That includes affirming every family built on love, respect, and belonging.

This Pride Month, we celebrate the beautiful diversity of our community and the many ways families thrive. Because wherever there is love, support, and belonging, family exists.
