Nature in the classroom 🌿

Together with our partners at LISC Jacksonville, we are proud to recognize educator Zoltan Ness at S.P. Livingston Elementary for meaningfully integrating nature and outdoor time into learning. Zoltan has been awarded a quarterly Nature-Engaged Teacher stipend to support nature-centered learning inside and outside of the classroom.

The Department of Health and Human Services released an advisory, calling the attention of Americans to an urgent public health issue: screen time among our youth and adolescents.

This advisory highlights the vital importance of reducing screen time for youth and adolescents emphasizing the negative effects on their social and emotional development and wellbeing.

This adds to the growing body of research that confirms excessive screen time is harmful, and that more time outside in nature offers many benefits that counteract those harms.

Learning and harvesting over at Long Branch Elementary!🥕

Recently, students at Long Branch Elementary School got a hands-on lesson all about carrots! With their hands in the soil, students had the opportunity to learn how carrots grow, harvest them straight from the garden, and even enjoy a fresh crunchy bite. It doesn’t get much better than that!

Over in the Eastside neighborhood, gardens are starting to bloom! Thanks to the support and hard work of our partners at LIFT JAX and Success Gardening, garden beds have been built, seeds have been planted, and flowers and vegetables are beginning to grow at A. Philip Randolph Heritage Park!

And this is only the beginning! Starting this summer, this garden will welcome a variety of community groups, giving community members of all ages the opportunity to get outside and get their hands dirty while working in the garden. It will also serve as a space for education and workshops focused on healthy eating, and cooking using items straight from the garden. 🌿

We live in a screen-filled world, but finding balance is key 📱✨

Start small by setting boundaries with your devices! Here’s how to set Screen Time limits on your iPhone:

• Open Settings
• Tap Screen Time
• Select App Limits
• Tap Add Limit
• Choose a category (like Social) or a specific app
• Set your daily time limit ⏱️
• Tap Add
💡 Pro tip: Turn on Downtime to schedule hours where only essential apps are allowed.

Less screen time = more time outside, more time to connect with family and friends.

Hands on learning = the best kind of learning! 🌿
