To celebrate Black History Month, the Onslow County Museum is proud to shine a spotlight on one of the remarkable leaders featured in our “The Water and The Wood” exhibit: Mr. J.W. Broadhurst, a guiding figure in Onslow County’s African American community and an educator whose impact continues to inspire generations.

Mr. Broadhurst became principal of Georgetown High School in 1937, leading the school through nearly three decades of transformation. Under his leadership, Georgetown became the first high school in Onslow County to earn accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, an achievement that forever expanded educational opportunity for local students.

Former students remember him with deep respect, carrying forward the wisdom he shared. His words still resonate today:

To the Class of 1962:
“Be a fair fighter… have you not learned great lessons from those who braced themselves against you?”

And to the Class of 1966:
“Do not drift into complacency… use this as a foundation for higher ideals, habits, and goals in life.”

To explore more about Georgetown High School and its enduring place in our community’s story, we invite you to visit the Onslow African American Heritage Trail, shared by Onslow County Tourism: https://www.onlyinonslow.com/african-american-heritage-trail/ .

As Black History Month begins, we honor leaders like Mr. Broadhurst and individuals whose strength, vision, and dedication helped shape Onslow County’s past and continues to guide its future.

Good evening all. I just sent out a gang of friend request. It would help us tremendously if the request is accepted and help us get the word out about what's happening in our Georgetown. Thank you in advance.
