A great example of what can be done when you try; when you add innovative solutions; when killing is off the table as a go-to solution. Many Florida shelters could use the KC Pet Project as an example of how to do 'no kill' the right way.
August was crazy busy at KC Pet Project and our incredible team saved a LOT of lives last month! We've taken in 7,601 new pets in the first 8 months of 2019. That’s 937 MORE dogs and cats than we had taken in last year at this time! Despite the high number of animals continuing to arrive, we still achieved a 93.9% save rate for the month of August and we're at an amazing 95.2% save rate for all dogs and cats in 2019. Here are some of our lifesaving stats for August:
- We sent 709 cats and dogs (582 cats/kittens and 127 dogs/puppies) to foster homes in August!! We started the month of August with 1,100 dogs and cats in our care and took in 991 additional dogs/cats during the month, so foster homes was one of the primary ways we could care for and save the number of animals we have during these busy summer months.
- ALL available dogs that have been in our shelter more than 150 days are currently in foster homes!
- Our veterinary team performed 590 surgeries in August and treated 115 severely injured dogs and cats that came through our doors through Animal Control and the public.
- We set a record of getting 109 dogs playing in canine playgroups in one day!
- We’ve treated 97 dogs with parvovirus in our parvo ward so far this year.
- We took in 374 new cats in August and we achieved an amazing 96.0% save rate in August for all cats and kittens that arrived.
- We adopted out 366 cats/kittens just in the month of August! That’s 2,484 cats/kittens adopted so far in 2019 – a new record once again for cat adoptions in our organization!
- We adopted out 384 dogs/puppies in the month of August (a new record number for our organization!).
Our new Kansas City Campus for Animal Care is well under construction, but we're not waiting to save more lives in our community. Our motto of "Solutions, Not Excuses" has been said many times this summer and we want to thank you all for the ways that you support our organization to help us save lives.
