A survivor’s story. A life changed by research. A reason to keep moving forward.

Bill Daly, a Stage 4C metastatic melanoma survivor, shares how his melanoma journey led him to the MRF and the community. After receiving immunotherapy treatment that saved his life, Bill knows firsthand just how powerful melanoma research can be and why continued investment in research matters.

As last year’s patient speaker, Bill experienced the event’s impact firsthand. For him, the evening was especially meaningful because the funds raised directly support melanoma research that can lead to better treatments and, ultimately, save more lives.

Research funded by is helping uncover new clues about how the immune system fights melanoma. 💙🔬

We’re proud to highlight Lilit Karapetyan, MD, recipient of a 2023 Career Development Award funded through the 3rd Annual event.

Dr. Karapetyan’s research explored how two key immune molecules, APRIL and TACI, influence the immune environment in melanoma and the development of tertiary lymphoid structures (TLS)—immune hubs within tumors that are associated with stronger anti-tumor responses.

Her work uncovered several important findings, including evidence that APRIL-TACI signaling may help support mature TLS and that TACI-rich areas are associated with heightened immune activity. She also made an unexpected discovery: surrounding fat tissue showed particularly high levels of APRIL, TACI and BAFF-R, suggesting it may play an important role in shaping immune responses around melanoma.

This is why funding research matters. Every event helps support scientists like Dr. Karapetyan as they pursue discoveries that can advance our understanding of melanoma and help move us closer to better treatments and, ultimately, a cure.

In 2021, Brittani Seynnaeve, MD received a Career Development Award funded by the inaugural event to study pediatric melanoma outcomes.

With this support, Dr. Seynnaeve enrolled more than 50 patients in a multi-institutional pediatric melanoma registry and contributed to two publications in Pediatric Blood & Cancer. Her research has continued to grow through additional funding, and she now gives back to the MRF community as a mentor and grant reviewer.
