Today, on National Grief Awareness Day, we recognize something survivors know all too well: grief does not have a timeline.

Grief changes, but it does not simply disappear. It can show up in tears, exhaustion, anger, silence, laughter, memories, or in moments when the weight of a loss suddenly feels brand new again.

At the Jacksonville Survivors Foundation, we understand that grief after homicide carries its own unique weight. Families are grieving someone they love while often navigating unanswered questions, investigations, court proceedings, anniversaries, and a world that may expect them to “move on.”

There is no right way to grieve.
There is no deadline for missing someone.
There is no point when you are required to be “over it.”

Today, we honor every person carrying the absence of someone they love. We remember the lives behind the grief, and we remind survivors that they do not have to walk this journey alone.

🎶 Exciting News from Jacksonville Survivors Foundation 🎶

We are honored to announce our partnership with Soundwave Music Therapy for our new program, Sound of Survival: Music Therapy for Homicide Survivors.

This program will offer a safe, supportive, and trauma-informed space for homicide survivors to process grief, build coping skills, honor their loved ones, and connect through music.

💙 Sign-ups open July 1, 2026
🎵 Sessions begin October 5, 2026

Sound of Survival is open to adults, teens, children, and families impacted by homicide loss.

We are grateful for this partnership and excited to bring another healing-centered resource to survivors in our community.

Moving forward does not mean leaving our loved ones behind. It does not mean we miss them less, forget what happened, or stop carrying their memory with us.

Sometimes moving forward looks like getting out of bed, answering a phone call, sharing a laugh without guilt, or allowing ourselves to imagine a future. These small steps are not betrayals of our grief. They are acts of courage.

We continue living while carrying their love, their lessons, and their memory with us. There is no required timeline and no “right” pace. Today, give yourself credit for every step—especially the ones no one else can see.
