Mamdani & others sue Trump over new green card restrictions

Trump's new green card rule would let immigration officers reject applicants for using Medicaid, food stamps, or even free school lunches. That is correct… KIDS eating lunch at school could cost their parents a green card.

New York Attorney General Letitia James and 21 other states announced a separate lawsuit challenging the public charge rule.

In a complaint filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, the cities and states argued the new rule will lead to an increase of homelessness, untreated illnesses, lack of access to education and food insecurity.

MAGA argues they are “cutting spending” by doing this but that is not the case. When you exclude people from preventative care and food assistance, you don't eliminate the cost, you defer it with interest. The IOM found that restricting healthcare access actually increases health spending by 49–100%, because untreated conditions become emergency room visits. Exclusion pushes costs into emergency rooms, homelessness services, and crisis systems. It is all a giant snowball.

The rule would deny green cards for applicants who may use some public benefits.

Federal prosecutors have charged ICE Officer Christian Castro with making false statements to investigators regarding the January shooting of Venezuelan man Julio Cesar Sosa-Celis in Minneapolis.

Castro was released from jail last week after Texas' governor refused to extradite him to Minnesota, where he faces separate assault charges. Charges against Sosa-Celis were dropped after video evidence of officers lying about the encounter. Reports also indicate DOJ officials blocked a more serious civil rights charge against Castro.

Federal prosecutors have charged a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer with lying to investigators about the events leading up to the shooting of a Venezuelan man during the Minneapolis immigration crackdown earlier this year.
