A federal appeals court has ruled that the Trump administration’s “mandatory detention” policy for immigrants awaiting deportation proceedings is unconstitutional.

The 6th Circuit Court of Appeals (covering MI, OH, KY, TN) said in a 2-1 decision that holding people indefinitely without a bond hearing violates due process, especially for long-term, law-abiding residents. The ruling restores decades of precedent requiring individual bond hearings.

The ACLU of Michigan says the decision affects thousands of detained immigrants in four states. Two other federal appeals courts have agreed, while two sided with the administration setting up a likely U.S. Supreme Court showdown.

The case involved a Michigan father of five with no criminal record who was jailed for nearly two months after a minor traffic stop.

If you’re able to contribute, please take a moment to give. Every little bit makes a difference. ❤️

Can ICE arrest someone while they’re showing up for court in Michigan?

A new state Supreme Court rule changes the answer.

Tony Bair told a Jackson County resident he won't apologize to any foreigner who doesn't speak English, calling immigrants parasites who embezzle billions from taxpayers.
