Since March, United Way of South Central Michigan has been collaborating with local Jackson nonprofits providing immediate and long-term support for those affected by the fire at Reed Manor. From the collection of basic need items and financial assistance via gift cards to recovery assistance, our Disaster Relief Fund has granted Jackson Strength Network , Community Action Agency, and Our Neighbor's Keeper the ability to continue helping those who were without a place to call home.

Take a closer look at where funds are continuing to be distributed. We are still accepting donations to the Disaster Relief Fund - give today by visiting https://unitedforscmi.org/community-crisis/?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=drf_2026

Beyond the Breadwinner: 5 Surprising Truths About the Modern American Dad
Jun 2
-Written By Justin Counts

For decades, the cultural archetype of the American father was defined by a specific kind of distance. In the 1960s, the "breadwinner" model reigned supreme: a father’s success was measured by the size of his paycheck, while the emotional and physical labor of child-rearing was delegated almost exclusively to mothers. In this era, the father was often a disciplinary figure of last resort—the shadow looming over a misbehaving child with the warning: "Wait until your father gets home."

However, looking at the latest datasets from the CDC and Pew Research, the modern reality is far more complex than a simple "progress" narrative. While fatherhood is more intensive than ever, the experience is becoming increasingly bifurcated. To understand the modern dad, we must look past the old tropes and into the data-driven truths that define his life today.

🚨 COMMUNITY IMPACT REPORT: Bridging the Gap from the Inside Out 🚨

The Jackson Strength Network, in a powerful collaboration with NLA (National Lifers of America) Chapter 1013 and POP 1st, recently hosted a transformative community initiative dedicated to uplifting and empowering local families.
Through this joint effort, we sponsored six local mothers and their children for a premium meal and a dignified networking experience, establishing direct pipelines to seasoned community mentors.

📖 The Heart of the Event: Reclaiming the Narrative
While the immediate focus was addressing baseline security and mentorship, the true emotional cornerstone of the gathering occurred during the literary distribution phase. Every mother in attendance was presented with a copy of the book authored entirely by the men currently on the inside serving time.
This literature is not detached curriculum; it represents raw truth, lived experience, and an intentional blueprint sent back over the walls to keep our youth three to four steps ahead of systemic traps.

📊 The Real-Time Impact

Holistic Support:100% of participating families received immediate material support, nutrition, and premium hospitality.

Human Capital Development:Established a 1:1 alignment between mothers and dedicated mentors to ensure long-term accountability structures.
Intergenerational Literacy: Put life-saving wisdom directly into local households, empowering mothers with tangible tools to foster deep resilience in their children.

🤝 True Leadership Transcends Bars
This initiative proves that physical confinement cannot restrict visionary leadership, purpose, or a deep love for the community. The men of NLA Chapter 1013 and POP 1st are not just navigating their circumstances—they are actively investing in, financing, and authoring the rehabilitation of the streets they left behind.
We extend our deepest gratitude and highest respect to the men on the inside, NLA Chapter 1013, and POP 1st for their profound sacrifice, their ex*****on, and their unwavering commitment to ensuring that no one is left behind.

Redeeming Threads is officially live, and we’re tapping into the city’s collective power to make real impact at scale. We’re partnering with NLA Chapter 1013 in Coldwater, where incarcerated men are crocheting hats and gloves for some of the most vulnerable people in our community — abused women, homeless seniors, and children facing harsh Michigan winters.

We need yarn donations to fuel this production pipeline. High-quality yarn directly translates into high-quality winter gear, and every skein becomes a tangible resource for someone in crisis.

Michigan reports over 66,000 domestic violence cases annually, seniors now make up 18% of our homeless population, and thousands of children lack adequate winter protection. Redeeming Threads bridges that gap through a restorative justice model proven to lower recidivism by up to 43% while increasing post-release stability.

This is community impact and rehabilitation operating in the same lane — real ROI, real lives changed.

🚨 Major change in student loan rules — some degrees are no longer considered “professional”
The Trump administration’s “One Big Beautiful Bill” will redefine which graduate degrees count as professional, affecting how much students can borrow.

Degrees now not classified as professional (meaning lower loan caps):

Nursing
Physician assistants
Physical therapists
Audiologists
Architects
Accountants
Educators/Teachers
Social workers

Why it matters:

The redefinition changes student loan access — “professional” students could borrow up to $200,000, but others face tighter limits.

Nursing groups are especially alarmed, saying this could worsen the nursing shortage.

Critics argue the rule favors higher-paying or more “prestigious” fields, and disadvantages workforces in education, healthcare, and social services.

Bottom line: This isn’t just a technical definition tweak — it could reshape who goes into certain professions, especially in high-need fields.
