A flood control solution for the Pearl River is officially moving forward. Today’s announcement marks a major milestone in long-standing efforts to reduce flood risk and strengthen resilience across the Jackson metro region and surrounding communities impacted by Pearl River flooding.
Following years of study, public engagement, and regional advocacy, the Rankin-Hinds Pearl River Flood and Drainage Control District, in coordination with The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, has advanced a plan based on the Alternative D1 flood control solution. This approach responds to decades of damaging flood events that have affected homes, businesses, public infrastructure, and water treatment systems throughout the Pearl River basin.
Beyond flood protection, the project supports a broader vision for the river corridor that includes public access, parks and trails, and ecological restoration alongside critical infrastructure improvements. The Pearl River Revitalization Coalition has worked to ensure these community benefits remain integrated as the project moves into its next phase.
We extend our sincere thanks to the Rankin Hinds Pearl River Flood and Drainage Control District, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and federal partners in Washington, DC for recognizing the urgency and importance of this investment. We also thank the residents across Jackson, Pearl, Flowood, Richland, and surrounding communities who submitted public comments and voiced their support for a more comprehensive approach. Your participation helped shape the future of the Pearl River.
This milestone represents an important step toward a safer, more resilient river corridor that serves communities across the region today and for generations to come. Learn more at pearlriverproject.org
