**NEW STATEWIDE E-BIKE REGULATIONS AND EDUCATION ⚡️🚲 **
Following a series of serious and fatal accidents involving electric bicycles (e-bikes), the State of New Jersey has officially established new safety standards. These standards are among the strictest in the United States. Whether you use your e-bike for commuting, exercise, or local errands, these changes affect everyone on the road.
🚨 LICENSING & REGISTRATION ARE NOW MANDATORY
⚡️E-bikes are no longer treated as standard bicycles. To operate legally, you must have:
• A Valid Driver’s License: You must be 17 years of age or older with a standard driver’s license (A separate e-bike license is not required if you already hold a standard license).
• Motorized Bicycle License: Required for riders aged 15 to 16 years of age.
• State Registration: Your e-bike must be officially registered with the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (NJMVC).
• Insurance: You are now required to carry insurance coverage for your e-bike.
• Note: Registration and license fees are being WAIVED for the first year!
⚠️UPDATED VEHICLE CLASSIFICATIONS:
⚡️The old "three-tier" system will no longer be recognized. The law now applies uniformly to all electric cycles, including:
⚡️Low-Speed E-Bikes (Pedal-Assist): Motors which stop assisting at 20 mph.
⚡️Motorized E-Bikes (Throttle-Controlled): Max speeds of up to 28 mph.
⚡️Electric Motorized Bicycles: High-powered models which exceed 28 mph.
⚡️Under the new law, ALL of these categories require the same licensing, registration, and insurance.
🚨AGE & SALES RESTRICTIONS
• 14 Years of Age and Under: Prohibited from operating any e-bike.
• 15–16 Years of Age: Motorized bicycle license required.
• 16 Years of Age: May only rent low-speed e-bikes through specific municipal programs.
• 17 Years of Age: Standard Driver’s License required.
• Online Sales Ban: Online sales of e-bikes are banned statewide for one year.
• No Modifications: It is now illegal to use kits that convert low-speed bikes into higher-powered models.
🚨DEADLINE TO COMPLY
⚡️The State of New Jersey is providing a six (6) month grace period for riders to comply with these new requirements. After this window closes, local authorities may begin issuing fines for non-compliance.
The Lacey Township Police Department remains determined to ensure the safety of our residents. As always, we encourage everyone to operate safely on our roadways. Thank you and stay safe!🚲
