Kudos to a Bellevue high school student who figured out an effective and cheaper way to remove a coho-killing chemical from stormwater runoff and was recently awarded $75,000 for her idea.

Last week we went to see Stewardship Partners box of rain in Bellevue. This low tech system filters freeway runoff and removes 92% of the toxic 6ppd-q tire chemical and other contaminants. Stormwater is collects from freeway stormwater drains, collected in a debris filter(black cylinder), then passed through bulk liquid container (mulch, sand coir mix), then released to the wetland. Lots of potential for this system to protect coho, steelhead, cutthroat, and chinook that are sensitive to this chemical. More on this soon.

Take a look at one of the emergency supplementation programs in action to help Lake Sammamish Kokanee Salmon. This program raises Kokanee for almost a year to give them a better chance of surviving in the wild and returning to spawn in about 3 years.

We love to see native fish thriving, and here in Lake Sammamish the Peamouth Chub are doing well. This time of year, while our volunteers are counting Kokanee fry, there will be a surge of peamouth into the stream to spawn. They are so abundant that they will be bank to bank and occupy most of the accessible habitat. They spawn over a day or two and disappear back to the depths of the Lake. Last weekend they were in Lewis Creek and today they began their journey into Laughing Jacob’s Creek.
Out an abundance of caution, our Kokanee fry trapping activities are paused while the peamouth are present.

Check out one of the Lake Sammamish Kokanee Salmon fry Traps. These devices are used to count the fry production of the previous spawning season and monitor the health of the population. Our local Three Rivers Chapter of Trout Unlimited and their volunteers have been doing this important work for nearly 20 years!
