UC Irvine Athena Breast Health Network The merge between improved clinical care and ground-breaking research on breast health Learn more at http://www.athenacarenetwork.org/.

UC Irvine is proud to be a founding member of the Athena Breast Health Network, a joint project of the University of California's five medical centers to unite California women, physicians and researchers in an effort to prevent breast cancer and improve screening and treatment of the disease. Mammogram patients at all of our UCI clinics are invited to participate in the Athena Study, an observati

onal study in which >100,000 women statewide will be followed for decades to enable researchers to identify new and better ways for breast cancer prevention, screening, treatment, and survivorship. Women between the ages of 40-74 who have never been diagnosed with breast cancer are invited to participate in the Wisdom Study, a clinical trial to test the safety and acceptability of personalized breast screening compared to annual screening. Nearly half of Black patients with metastatic breast cancer are never informed about clinical trial participation, despite the fact that most are open to the idea. https://bit.ly/3x9YzGg

Increased participation in studies like WISDOM will give more Black women access to research. Talk with your sisters, mothers, aunts & friends about trials so that we can improve treatment and prevention of Black breast cancer.

The Wisdom Study is working to determine the safest and best way to detect .

We are comparing screening all women annually starting at the age of 40 to a personalized approach based on a woman’s individual risk factors for breast cancer.

If you are in the personalized arm of the study, you are given a screening plan based on your risk factors for breast cancer such as your age, genetics, and family history. https://www.thewisdomstudy.org/faqs/
