Established in 2009, The Green Initiative Fund (TGIF) is a student led fee referendum designed to empower undergraduate students with the financial resources to fund projects regarding the 3 main aspects of sustainability: economy, ethics & environment

Funded by a $3.50 per quarter student fee beginning in Fall 2009, The Green

Initiative Fund is a grant-making fund for sustainability projects on UC Irvine’s campus. About $150,000 per academic year is available for grants for any undergraduate students, clubs, organizations, or collaborative between organizations/departments to submit project proposals. The principle goal of the Green Initiative Fund is to provide funding for projects, which overall reduce the impact of the University on the environment.

Project Spotlight: Solar Electric Bicycle (Fall 2018)

Solar electric bicycles incorporate the knowledge of sustainability and engineering, making bikes that generate electricity from solar power and mechanical power from pedaling. The specially designed bike has a solar panel, motor, and generator. People can use the bike electricity to charge their electronic devices as well. The bikes will be set up for demonstrations on campus.

Project Spotlight: Engineers for a Sustainable Water Nozzle (Fall 2018)

The water saving nozzle project aimed to design improved nozzles that would reduce water usage on campus. Students worked together to create the most optimal prototype with 3D printing, ultimately working towards pitching the product to be installed on campus.

Project Spotlight: Green Public Art at Mesa Court (Winter 2018)

This project invited students from The Claire Trevor school of the Arts to collaborate with Mesa Court and its residents. The goal was to divert plastic waste from residence halls to put on display through an art medium.
