For 251 years, the U.S. Navy has answered the call – sailing farther, fighting harder, and strengthening the maritime force alongside Marines around the globe.

Yesterday marked 55 years since the Marine Corps lost its greatest legend.

Lt. Gen. Lewis Burwell "Chesty" Puller is the most decorated Marine in American history — and he holds a record no one has ever touched.

He was awarded the Navy Cross FIVE times. The Navy Cross is the Navy and Marine Corps' second-highest award for bravery in combat — one step below the Medal of Honor. No one else in U.S. history has ever earned five of them.

Puller's five Navy Crosses spanned 20 years and three wars:
• Nicaragua, 1930 — leading jungle patrols against the Sandino rebels
• Nicaragua, 1932 — again, with the famed Guardia Nacional patrols
• Guadalcanal, 1942 — holding the line when his battalion was nearly overrun
• Cape Gloucester, 1943–44 — New Britain campaign
• Chosin Reservoir, Korea, 1950 — commanding the 1st Marines through the "frozen Chosin" breakout

He also earned the Army's Distinguished Service Cross at Chosin, the Silver Star, and a long list of other medals. At Chosin, surrounded by the enemy in minus-30-degree cold, he delivered one of the most famous lines in Marine history: "We've been looking for the enemy for some time now. We've finally found him. We're surrounded. That simplifies things."

He retired in 1955 after 37 years of service and died on October 11, 1971. The Corps honoured him the only way it could — naming its beloved bulldog mascot "Chesty" after him.

Say his name with respect, Marines. Ooh-rah.
