Cantemus is SO excited to collaborate with our guest artist Miranda Russell and her five-piece combo for our May concerts titled “The Great American Songbook — with a Modern Spin.” Well-known on the North Shore and beyond, Miranda delights crowds with her interpretations of everything from folk tunes to jazz to Big Band sounds. Our partnership with Miranda and her band will span the gamut of the beloved American Songbook -- think Gershwin and Porter to Dylan and Prince! By the end, we’ll all be singing together. Ahh, the Great American Songbook, full of optimism, fun, and love! Cantemus is loving preparing for our May 2 and 3 concerts featuring these great songs with special guest, jazz-pop-folk artist Miranda Russell. So whether you say po-TAY-to or po-TAH-to, we’re not calling anything off. We’ll be singing these well-loved favorites, because, as the song goes: “When you’re near, there’s such an air of spring about it. I can hear a lark somewhere begin to sing about it. There’s no love song finer …”

The sopranos and altos of Cantemus broke their piggy banks to come up with el dinero to sponsor the repeat appearance of their favorite guitarist, Chris Rubén Winters .ruben.winters, at the upcoming "Shared Breath, Shared Song" concerts on Dec. 7, 13, & 14 in Newburyport, Swampscott & Gloucester. Chris will join us in the exciting "Creole Mass" that caps our concerts. Written by Argentine composer Ariel Ramírez, the "Misa Criolla" combines folk music traditions of the indigenous peoples of South America with the forms and practices of Western art music. Chris will draw on his roots in jazz, salsa, and classical music to add plenty of Latin flair to this mass! Please join us!

Cantemus is so excited to welcome first-generation Latinx tenor Josaphat Contreras Josaphat R. Contreras as featured soloist in our December concerts, “Shared Breath, Shared Song: Sacred Music Across Faiths.” Hailed for his flexible ringing tenor notes and comfortability in performing diverse repertoire, Josaphat has performed with the historic Teatro Ángela Paralta in Mexico, Boston Lyric Opera, the Boston Pops Orchestra, and others. He’s even sung back-up for Josh Groban and Andrea Bocelli. Josaphat will perform with Cantemus in the “Misa Criolla” by Argentine composer Ariel Ramírez. It’s an electrifying and spirited work that we’re thrilled to share with our audiences in Newburyport (12/7), Swampscott (12/13), and Gloucester (12/14). Welcome! A new Cantemus season — and new singers at their first rehearsal! A chorus’s sound is built like a pyramid: The base comes from new Basses Dennis, Cormac and Brian….new Altos Jill, Alexis and Azalea form the middle….and new Sopranos Alex and Anna top off the pyramid of sound. Now 45 voices strong, Cantemus will present “Shared Breath, Shared Song: Sacred Music Across Faiths” in December.

On a muggy night this week, current and prospective new members met for the annual Cantemus Season Preview. Under the baton of Artistic Director Jason Iannuzzi, the group took deep breaths and began sight-singing songs from their winter concert program, "Shared Breath, Shared Song: Sacred Music Across Faiths." From Rachmaninoff's "Bogoroditse Devo" and Duruflé's "Ubi Caritas" to a Hebrew "Prayer Before Sleep"and an Islamic chant, "Zikr," the group got a taste of the music to come. The centerpiece of their winter concerts is "Misa Criolla," by Argentine composer Ariel Ramírez, for chorus, tenor soloist, guitars and three percussionists — this mass really rocks! Mark your calendars for December 7, 13 and 14 in Newburyport, Swampscott and Gloucester, respectively. Stay tuned for more!

You're invited to our free Season Preview Open Rehearsal on Tuesday, August 26 at 7:15 p.m. at First Church in Wenham, 1 Arbor Street. Artistic Director Jason Iannuzzi says, “Whether you want to pick up a score and sing with us, or just relax and listen as we take our first steps toward building our next great performance, it’s always a lively and fun evening and a great way to meet the Chorus.”

The Chorus is seeking singers in all voice parts, especially tenors and basses. We are also recruiting high school and college age singers for our Choral Intern program. Auditions will take place September 9 and September 16, 2025.
