Ellsworth Community College to celebrate the 1976 football team and an era of strong athletics
Fifty years can pass in the blink of an eye.
But for the Cheerleaders and football players of Ellsworth Community College in 1976, the memories of that season remain as vivid as ever.
In 1976, the Ellsworth Panthers put together an undefeated football season, earning an invitation to Pasadena, California, to participate in the Junior Rose Bowl. It was a remarkable accomplishment for a community college program—and one that helped highlight a time when Ellsworth athletics was a source of tremendous pride for the college and the surrounding community.
Now, half a century later, Ellsworth Community College is bringing members of that team and others from the era back together for a 50th reunion.
The reunion is more than a celebration of one undefeated football season. It is an opportunity to remember an era when Ellsworth had a strong and highly competitive athletic department, and to recognize the coaches, athletes, cheerleaders, supporters and college community who helped make those years special.
For the members of the 1976 team, however, it all started with a football season.
Week after week, the Panthers continued to win. The confidence grew, the expectations grew, and eventually the team found itself with an opportunity few community college football teams ever experience: a trip to Pasadena and a chance to play in the Junior Rose Bowl.
For young athletes from a small Iowa college, traveling to Southern California for such a prestigious postseason experience was something they would never forget.
The football field may have been the center of attention, but the memories went far beyond the games. Teammates became lifelong friends. Coaches became mentors. Road trips, practices, locker-room conversations and Saturday afternoons became stories that would be told for decades.
And 50 years later, those stories still matter.
The reunion provides an opportunity for former teammates to reconnect and for the college community to look back at a period when Ellsworth athletics played an important role in campus life.
Athletic programs do more than keep score. They bring students together, create connections with communities and give young people opportunities to learn about teamwork, discipline, leadership and perseverance.

As former players and cheerleaders gather for the 50th reunion, they will have the opportunity to revisit those memories, share stories and celebrate friendships that began on the football field in 1976.
The reunion also offers a chance for today’s Ellsworth community to learn about and appreciate the athletic tradition that helped shape the college.
Fifty years after the Panthers’ undefeated season, the names, faces and circumstances may have changed—but the memories remain.
The 1976 Ellsworth football team didn’t simply have a season to remember.
They created a legacy.
And after 50 years, that legacy is still worth celebrating.
