Petals was honored to be able to attend the Wonderful Westside Neighborhood Association’s first event! We were able to host another “pH Invisible Ink” table, helping us impact over 120 kids through only two events. We’re incredibly excited to continue impacting our community through these STEM tables🩷

We were thrilled to be able to visit Van Allen Elementary School’s Blast Off event and create pH invisible ink drawings with the students! We look forward to attending more community events and spreading Petals wherever we go💐

Thank you to Van Allen PTSO for hosting us, and to all our wonderful volunteers for helping us execute our first STEM table. We couldn’t have done it without them!

Day 5: Robotics!

For our last day, representatives from both Liberty and West High’s robotics teams visited and helped the girls build and code robots before competing in a fun game with them. They had so much fun with our amazing volunteers, including someone from the Golden Beaker.

Since this is our last day, we surprised them with a cake and certificates. We literally could not have done this program without them, and we are beyond grateful for being able to provide this for them, and we also want to thank our volunteers and advisor (with a special shout out to Liberty’s librarians!) for helping bring this program to life. We hope to host many more programs in the future since there is always more room to bloom🌺

Day 4: Structural engineering

Today we had a special guest from IC STEM for Youth. The girls were taught about structural engineering and how scientists incorporate different shapes and materials to make the best buildings. They experimented with marshmallow spaghetti towers and penny floats to open their eyes to the world of engineering. 🪷

At the end we took a look at how polymers play a key role into making slime. 🧪

The girls have been having an amazing week so far and we’re so excited for our final day of the August summer camp.

Day 3: Physics

Today we learned about the difference between potential and kinetic energy and how Newton’s Laws and gravity affects the motion of objects through building catapults, slingshots, and balloon powered cars. We also learned about the density’s of liquids by creating lava lamps with vegetable oil, vinegar, and baking soda. 🌺

Everyone had a fun time today and we hope that more girls will join us in the future. Registration is still open and volunteers are always welcome!

Day 2: Chemistry

We started off the day with explaining to the girls the basics of chemistry, and showed them an example of a chemical reaction with elephant toothpaste! It was messy but definitely worth it, and it truly helped them understand how and why chemical reactions take place. We then learned about pH with a red cabbage indicator lab, and had them guess a mystery mixture, before we finished off the day with invisible ink drawings!

We’re having a great start so far, and we thank all the volunteers for giving their time to help these girls blossom🌸 . Remember, registration is still open for the rest of the week!

Day 1: Biology

Today the girls learned about biology and how osmosis is an important part of our life! They did a potato experiment to demonstrate and see how osmosis works, and they planted marigolds which they will be watching throughout the week. 🌼

Thank you for all the girls that came today and rmemeber registration is still open throughout the week so feel free to sign up! Volunteering is still open as well.
