The Austin ”Flash” Schroeder story

On April 14, 2014, Fourteen year old Austin “Flash” Schroeder of Coralville was diagnosed with T-Lymphoblastic Lymphoma, stage 3 and has recently begun chemo therapy that will continue over the next two years. Flash is known for his infectious smile, positive attitude, his love for baseball and respect towards both the game and those associated with it. The chem

o that the doctors had originally planned for Austin's 2 year treatment, did not work. So, plan B is to administer chemo and get him prepared for a Bone Marrow Transplant. On July 23, 2014, Austin received a Bone Marrow Transplant after a week long of chemo and radiation. Austin reached his first milestone, post Bone Marrow Transplant, of 100 days on October 31, 2014. Austin suffered a seizure on the morning of November 9, 2014 and was rushed to the University of Iowa Children's hospitals. In a matter of days, the family was given the news that Austin's cancer had returned and spread. The doctors told the family that the cancer was in his spinal fluid, lymph nodes and in his bone marrow and he is now classified as Stage 4 Lymphoblastic Lymphoma. He was started on a new regimen of chemo and has responded nicely. After Austin heard that he may have an extended hospital stay of approximately 4 weeks in the hospital, he battled on and insisted he could get healthy enough to come home. His persistence paid off, Austin was sent home to continue his newest chemo schedule on an out-patient basis. ♥️⚡️Yesterday we gathered inside the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital for a moment that felt especially meaningful. In our tenth year as an organization, we presented this year’s fundraising check to the AYA Adolescent Young Adult Cancer Program at the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital in the amount of $122,022.22.

This gift represents every person who showed up for the mission throughout 2025: those who attended events, volunteered time, worked behind the scenes, purchased merch that raises funds, gave memorial gifts, spread the word, and supported the foundation in countless quiet ways. Every contribution helped make this year’s donation possible.

To the doctors, nurses, and staff who care for young patients and their families every day, thank you. You are true heroes, and your impact reaches far beyond medical treatment.

Adding this year’s donation brings our total giving to over $1,122,000 across ten years. A decade of generosity, community, and choosing to WIN THE DAY together.

Our superhero ⚡️FLASH⚡️ continues to inspire us each and every day & this past Friday we were honored to celebrate 10 years of Adolescent & Young Adult (AYA) Superheroes at our 10th Annual Fight With Flash Charity Golf Classic! ⚡️

We are beyond BLESSED by the continued amazing support of this community. Thank you to all the sponsors, golfers, volunteers, in-kind donors, and auction bidders who helped make this event such a huge success!

A big thanks to Finkbine Golf Course and their incredible staff for ensuring everything ran smoothly.

A special thank you to Dr. Dickens, AYA patients Kaden Miller & Nolan Elmore for sharing words & golfing & our dear friends Brad & Darcy Schaefer for sharing some of Tate’s story with us all. Your presence and words made the day so incredibly meaningful!
