Who Keep Us Safe?! We Keep Us Safe!

Indy Action leaders were loud and clear during our public action last week. With 550 people in the room this movement made clear demands of our city government and charted a path forward for our organizing.

We were excited to secure commitments from Mayor Hogsett and Councilor Nielsen on ensuring Streets to Home funding can continue.

We also secured a meeting with the mayor to discuss some of our planning on community safety and strategic organizing. Even though we filled the room and then some, there’s still space for you in this movement!

Tonight, we host our public action and are excited to welcome over 500 leaders!

500 people who will be invited into a movement to create a different kind of Indiana.

500 people who want to commit to keeping everyone in Indianapolis safe

500 people who will make clear demands of our elected officials and hold them accountable to keeping us safe.

We didn’t reach our turnout goal through social media or paid advertising. But real-life relationship building. This is our power and how we keep us safe!

We’re not waiting for politicians, celebrities, or the wealthy elite to come and save us. It’s on us to protect our communities. Our leaders have decided that they are ready to do exactly this.

From church basements to statehouse press conferences, we’ve been hard at work organizing. On March 12th, we were mobilizing our people.

We’re still waiting for the mayor to confirm if he will stand with the community and be in attendance. We will continue to engage his office to make sure he’s in the room. We need you in the room us too! You won’t want to miss the We Keep Us Safe public action.

A death investigation is underway after an inmate died while in the custody of U.S. Immigration & Customs Enforcement at the Miami Correctional Facility in Miami County.

“We keep Us Safe” is more than a slogan. It’s a call and a commitment. We know that in this crisis moment, with our communities under attack, safety is not guaranteed. Instead, we must create the conditions for our friends, neighbors, and loved ones to be safe.

Our movement is doing exactly that. Last night over 100 leaders gathered to launch the public action. We set a goal of 400 leaders in the room on March 12 where we will be bringing real demands to keep our community safe from some of the ways the federal administration is trying to destroy families and communities.

Housing First works!

Streets to Home is at work, creating real results. Since the end of the summer, nearly 50 neighbors facing chronic homelessness now have access to housing.

We knew when we organized on this issue, we needed to be fast. Our state and federal governments are still looking to criminalize homelessness. We need to keep funding interventions that work to show our community that incarceration is not the solution to homelessness.

Last week, Indy Action returned to launch our research season! After spending the last few weeks engaging with our congregations, neighborhoods, and broader community, we’re now addressing the issues that were most pressing in our conversations. We will engage subject matter experts, lawmakers, and policy leaders to uncover the changes we can make with the power we are building.

Across the city, Indy Action Coalition leaders have been hosting listening sessions to uncover the next set of issues we will organize around. Together, we will build a campaign to push back against the attacks by the state and federal government and fight for a community that works for everyone.
