Southside United for Indy Trails

Provide your comment on the Greenways For All plan, put forth by Indianapolis DPW--who regularly encourages SUIT on our efforts for more Southside trail connectivity! While we're realistic that trail construction comes only with lots of funding, time, and community will, it's encouraging to see so many Southside trail opportunities included in the plan.

S County Line Road - The redesign includes a multiuse trail on the north side and a sidewalk on the south side. That's a really important active transportation connection! The planned roundabout is a proven safer intersection for all users, while keeping vehicles moving smoothly.

Note - The center turn lane is designed to reduce rear-end crashes, so drivers can pull out of the moving traffic lane. There are periodic medians, so drivers don't use that center lane for racing or reckless high speed passing.

This month's regular SUIT meeting will be in the same place (Beech Grove City Hall), but the start time will push to 7pm in the first-floor Conference Room. We'll hear from a Decatur Twp Equestrian Club; finalize our 2027 project list; plan our October Southside community bike ride; and get deeper into fundraising planning for the end of the year. See you Tuesday at 7pm!

Volunteers use paint to shrink down and jazz up an intersection near Stephen Decatur Elementary School on Indy's Southside with the school's colors.

Students at Stephen Decatur Elem went back to school in style this week with their school colors on the roadway and a safer school zone! Our volunteers laid out this project to help keep motorists extra mindful when driving near our Southside kiddos. The feedback helps us understand if our project was effective! Take the questionnaire…

Southside United for Indianapolis Trails is looking for feedback about a traffic calming project it launched earlier this year as a way to slow down traffic.

The online survey asks people what type of transportation they use when traveling in the area, how they feel about the calming project and if it’s made a noticeable impact to safety.

The survey is available in both English and Spanish. Link in comments.

Our Troy Ave traffic-calming demonstration is now complete and un-installed, but we still need YOU as the users to tell us about its impact. Here’s the link; it’s two minutes: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeZ2wi23KBpZhcAbU9giOur92aqCTHsDRI9Fkue8IEB0nz2DQ/viewform

Residents can share whether the Indianapolis southside project slowed traffic near the Bean Creek neighborhood.

It was great to learn from Jeff Mader (Mader Design LLC) last evening about new trends in trail-making and greenspace design, from the private sector perspective. We’ll see you next month for more Southside trail discussion and action!
