America's First PTSD Service Dog Charity Built Just for Abuse Survivors

The Freedom K9 Project is a service dog organization that trains service dogs to help survivors overcome the struggles of PTSD. Integrating into normal life after trauma can seem impossible, but we work both with the dogs and the survivors to create a team that leads to the healing of the survivor.

A Little Help Goes a Long Way!

Supporting service dogs doesn’t always mean doing something big. Sometimes, it’s as simple as giving a working team space, respecting their boundaries, and taking the time to learn.

Whether you’re out in public, advocating in your community, or supporting a local organization, you can make a difference for service dogs and the people who rely on them.

There are many misconceptions about service animals, and one is that they have to be a specific breed (such as a Labrador or golden retriever).

While breeds such as the lab and golden retrievers are more often great candidates for service work, breed alone does not determine suitability.

Thinking of bringing your to a movie? Here are 3 skills to master to ensure a smooth experience with your pup!

Desensitize your service dog in training to loud speakers. Movies (especially in theaters) can be very loud. Prepare with ear muffs, if necessary.

Work on very long downstays. Movies can last two, three, even four hours. Practice watching TV shows and movies at home before taking your SDIT to a public theater.

Add distractions to your downstays. There are many distractions in public theaters, and not much space to move once you and your pup are settled in. Practice downstays while stepping around/over your dog, food dropping nearby, and with clapping/vocalizing.

Donate blankets, food, and toys to your local animal welfare organization.

Teach your dog a new trick!

Write to your local congressperson and ask that they support the ban of puppy mills.

Any other way you want to show love to the dogs in your life!

Prevalence of PTSD among adults was higher for females (5.2%) than males (1.8%), as well as for adolescent females (8.0%) when compared to adolescent males (2.3%).

These disparities suggest that women and girls may represent a larger proportion of individuals who could benefit from evidence-based interventions, including psychiatric service dogs trained to perform tasks that mitigate PTSD symptoms such as interrupting panic attacks, providing grounding during dissociative episodes, and creating personal space in public settings.

Survivor's Companion is dedicated to expanding access to PTSD service dogs, recognizing the growing need for these interventions among those affected by PTSD, particularly women and girls who experience the disorder at disproportionately higher rates.

Did you know cats play an important role in training and evaluating assistance animals. By exposing young assistance dogs in training to cats and other small animals, we can evaluate their instincts and help train them to be neutral to such exciting stimuli!
