Tonight was a beautiful night for being outside. Scouts gathered for some trail cleaning, nature exploring and backpacking practice. We discussed safety and hiking rules, went over some basic first aid skills, and headed into the trails. We collected 8 grocery bags of trash tonight while we checked out a bunch of different plants and trees along the trails. Scouts also found a variety of wildlife signs, including animal tracks, droppings, habitats, feathers and more.

Tonight we worked on Citizenship in The Community merit badge. Chris Mitchell, from the Community Access Center and Home Sweet Home, was one of our guest speakers tonight. He talked about some services available in the community and how the organizations he works with helps serve the community. Our other guest speaker was Luis Ysusi, former mayor and city commissioner. He spoke about how serving in an elected position works, how he has served the community, and how citizens (even youth) can raise concerns to the city.

All of the Scouts did an amazing job tonight building fires. 🔥 They all were able to get a fire going without matches or lighters. They learned about fire safety, what to do in case of burns or other injuries, and how to treat a fire when it's time to put it out.

Troop 16 had an amazing time helping with the Flat Rock race this weekend. We were camped out as the support station at mile marker 3 for the runners. Most runners pass through our station multiple times depending on the distance they are running, up to 101k. (Mile 3 on the way in, and approximately mile 58 on their final return through)

We operate a table of snacks, drinks, food, and first aid as needed during the race, and track the runners as they pass through. This race is up to 24 hours so the boys are cooking and cheering all night long. The runners enjoy smelling the campfire and knowing that the scout station is just ahead of them.

A few members of Troop 16 went to District Camporee this weekend. They grilled Friday night, led the opening flag ceremony Saturday morning, and had fun doing all day activities. They even enjoyed doing the community service project of cleaning up some hiking trails.
Scouts made fire starters, pump drills, and wooden cups. They learned how to make char cloths, and then Grant helped teach another group how to make them. Great job Scouts!
