Seeing this happen in Immokalee is not only painful, it is devastating for the children of the community. Students have been taken out of school to join their deported mothers/fathers in a lands foreign to them. TPU knows the greatness each one of those students carries within themselves and to watch as their life is uprooted due to such egregious violations of the law is gut-wrenching. To stay silent today dishonors everything our people have fought for. We are all humans and deserve to be treated with respect and dignity. To any child or family currently looking for any assistance, feel free to send a message. We will do our best to provide resources and share any connections we may have.
Yesterday, local artists created this memorial piece to honor the 35 families torn apart by Florida Highway Patrol and Department of Homeland Security agencies, including ICE. It has a chain link filled silhouette a mother embracing her young child, who she was separated from. It was placed on Camp Keis Road, outside of Ave Maria, where the bus was stopped.
Today it was removed by someone.
