Birders in the DC–MD–VA area, this needs your attention.
There is a proposal to build a Vegas-style Sphere at National Harbor, directly along the Potomac River. That stretch of river is a major migratory corridor used by thousands of birds every year, especially during spring and fall migration.
Bright, animated lighting and large glass structures are well documented to cause bird disorientation and fatal collisions, particularly near waterways. Placing a high-intensity illuminated structure on the riverfront would dramatically increase those risks.
This is a preventable issue if concerns are raised early. A petition is calling for a pause and a full environmental review focused on wildlife, light pollution, and river impacts.
If you care about migratory birds, the Potomac flyway, and responsible planning, please take a moment to read and consider signing.
