In 1792, New
Spain Viceroy Juan Vincente Guemes to explore the Pacific Coast and compile an extensive ethnography of the inhabitants. Jose Mariano Mozino, a well-known naturalist accompanied this exploration team and chronicled the expedition in a journal. This journal was undiscovered until 1913 and is part of the Beinecke Rare Book and Library Collection know as: Noticias de Nuka: An Account of Nootka Sound in 1792. The Mozino journal documents about a creature named the Matlog which dwelled in the mountains and terrorized the Nootka tribe. The Matlog is described as being a huge monstrous body covered in black bristle-type hair. Its skull was similar to a human’s but much larger with strong fangs. The arms were long with curved claws on the fingers and it was known to emit a terrible scream. In 1928, a similar account of a creature in the same area of the Nootka tribe community, a trapper named Muchalat Harry left the Nootka Indians and travel up the Conuma River. During the night while he was settled down for the night in front of his campfire, he was lifted off the ground and carried away. He was abducted and taken to a camp of Matlogs. Harry had thought that his fate was about to come to an end, but he noticed that the Matlogs were more interested in his blanket. During the course of the day, the creatures lost interest and he was able to escape and never returned to the area or go into the forest alone. By the 20th century, these creatures became known as “Bigfoot”. Many Names of Bigfoot
Almas - The Almas is described as a humanoid bipedal creatures approximately five to six and half feet tall. Their bodies are covered with reddish-brown hair with facial features being anthropomorphic (brow ridge, flat nose, and a weak chin). Species have been reputed to inhabit the Pamir and Caucasus Mountains of Asia and the Altat Mountains of Mongolia. Barmanu - The Barmanu is described as a humanoid bipedal creatures that resemble the Neanderthal. Their bodies are covered with hair and rinks of a horrible stench. Species have been reputed to inhabit the Shishi Kuh Valley in eastern Afghanistan. The Fouke Monster (aka The Boggy Creek Monster) - The Fouke Monster (aka The Boggy Creek Monster) is described as being a six foot tall, hairy, humanoid monster from the Ozark Hills of Arkansas. In 1973, a low-budget horror movie called “The Legend of Boggy Creek” was filmed due to the story being so popular. Kushtaka - The Kushtaka is a mythical shape shifting creature thought to be found in the Southeastern Alaska rainforest. The Kushtaka are said to have the capability to assume human form, the form of an otter and potentially other forms. It is also said that the Kushtaka can emit a high pitched whistle being a three part low-high-low pattern. Mande Barung - The Mande Burung is a large, hairy, bipedal hominoid believed to inhabit the Meghalaya subtropical forests in the Garo Hill of India. The Ohio Grassman - The Ohio Grassman is a smaller hairy bipedal hominoid that is reported to inhabit the grasslands of Ohio. Reports have said that it is approximately 7 feet tall and 300 pounds. It has been noted to leave 3 toed tracks. Orang Pendek - The Orang Pedek is the smallest bipedal species that is reported to inhabit the mountainous forest on the island of Sumatra. It is covered in short fur and stands between 3 to 5 feet tall. Rock Apes - The Rock Apes are described as being a bipedal hominoid approximately 6 feet tall and covered with gray to brown to black hair except the knees, soles of the feet, hands and the face. Witnesses have said to be very aggressive. Sasquatch - The Sasquatch is a creature that is described as a large hairy bipedal hominoid. Reports state that it inhabits the forests lands in the Pacific Northwest. Skookum - The Skookum is a mountain giant monster similar to a Bigfoot or Sasquatch. It is said to inhabit in the Pacific Northwest primarily in the Oregon area.
