The Alabama Extension office is offering their Venomous Snake Training for First Responders in Centreville on June 27! This is a training for first responders to learn snake identification, best practices when around snakes or handing/securing snakes, and what to do when a bite occurs. Space is limited for individual hands-on practice. Lunch included.

This past weekend, HCRU conducted an SRT (Single Rope Technique) class for both new and experienced students. Unfortunately, several participants were unable to return for day two after being called away to assist with an actual rescue.

While we missed them in class, we’re proud to see dedicated rescuers putting their skills to work when the call comes. Training and real-world response go hand in hand, and this past weekend was a reminder of why both are so important.

Thank you to everyone who helped make the class a success and to those who answered the call to help others.

This was our final training class before summer. Our last class of the year will be held in October, with dates and registration information to be announced in the coming months. We look forward to seeing both new and returning students there.

Yesterday, HCRU was requested to assist the Scottsboro Jackson County Rescue Squad with a cave rescue in Jackson County. Upon arrival, crews were advised of a second rescue involving another cave, resulting in multiple incidents occurring simultaneously.

We are grateful that both rescues ended with all individuals safely recovered. Flooded roads, high water, debris, challenging conditions, and multiple rescue operations made for a long evening, but thanks to the dedication and professionalism of everyone involved, they were successful.

Yesterday was truly a team effort. We are incredibly thankful for the support of Scottsboro-Jackson County Rescue Squad and the many agencies, responders, and volunteers who either responded or were actively attempting to respond when called. Some traveled considerable distances to lend a hand, demonstrating the strength of the emergency services community and the commitment to helping those in need.

To everyone who answered the call, supported operations, or stood ready to assist—thank you. Your quick response, teamwork, and willingness to serve made all the difference.

As a reminder, conditions can change rapidly. Please monitor weather forecasts, be aware of flooding risks, and always practice safe caving habits.
