Update #6 --
Dear Southern University Community,
We understand that the past several days have been challenging as ongoing power issues have disrupted normal campus operations and required classes to move to a virtual format and remote administrative operations. We know this is not an ideal situation, and we want to assure you that we are working diligently to identify and resolve these issues. We are planning for normal campus operations to resume on Monday, September 14.
At this time, power is restored to academic buildings and residence halls. While power has been restored, testing and maintenance will continue to ensure our electrical systems are stable and our buildings are ready for a safe and orderly return to full, in-person operations.
Operations for Thursday, September 10, and Friday, September 11 for SUBR, SULC, and SU Ag:
To allow our teams adequate time to conduct testing, address internal building maintenance needs resulting from the outages and prepare facilities for our return, classes will continue virtually on Thursday and Friday, September 10 and 11. University employees will also continue remote operations unless otherwise directed by their supervisors.
The Southern University Laboratory School will return to in-person operations on Thursday, September 10 and Friday, September 11.
Faculty and students should continue to monitor Canvas and their University email for information regarding classes and academic activities. Employees should monitor their University email for operational updates and instructions from their supervisors.
Wi-Fi access is available in all residential housing. Mayberry and Dunn dining facilities remain operational. The Smith-Brown Memorial Student Union also has power, with generator support continuing for the food court.
We extend our sincere appreciation to our Facilities Services team, whose members have worked tirelessly throughout this situation. They have worked collaboratively with Entergy, Ellis Electric, J-Bolt Electric and Mr. Larry James to restore power to our academic and residential facilities. We thank each of these teams and individuals for their responsiveness, expertise and commitment to Southern University.
Additionally, University administrators have also met with state, local, and federal officials, Congressman Cleo Fields, Public Service Commissioner Davante Lewis, Senator Regina Barrow, Representative Barbara Carpenter, Councilwoman Carolyn Coleman, Higher
Education Commissioner Kim Hunter Reed, the Division of Administration - Facilities Planning and Control, the Board of Regents, the Governorโs Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (GOHSEP), the Mayorโs Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (MOHSEP), and Entergy to coordinate resources, including generators, to help restore and maintain power across campus. We are grateful for the support and cooperation of our governmental, utility and community partners.
Throughout these disruptions, our students and faculty have demonstrated tremendous patience, flexibility and resilience. We recognize that moving to virtual classes, navigating power interruptions and adjusting to changing campus operations have not been easy.
As we prepare to return to full operations, our work will not end with restoring power. The University will conduct a holistic assessment of the campus electrical system to identify long-term, sustainable solutions that strengthen the reliability and resiliency of our infrastructure and help prevent disruptions in the future.
Again, please continue to monitor your University email, Canvas, the Jags Safe app and Southern Universityโs official social media channels for updates.
Thank you again for your patience and resilience. We look forward to welcoming everyone back to campus and resuming full operations on Monday, September 14.
