💜 ARE YOU LIVING IN SURVIVAL MODE? Sometimes survival mode doesn’t look like falling apart. Sometimes it looks like spending years trying to figure everything out.

Where would we live if I left?
How would I afford rent by myself?
How would I pay the bills?
What would happen with the kids?
Would anyone believe me?
What if leaving makes things worse?
Where would I go?
How would I get there?
What about my pets?
What documents would I need?
Could I keep my job?
Who could I actually trust?
How do I start over when I barely have enough to survive where I am?

And then you wake up the next morning and do everything you’re supposed to do.

You make breakfast.
You get the kids ready.
You go to work.
You answer messages.
You pay what bills you can.
You clean the house.
You take care of everyone else.

But somewhere in the background, your brain is constantly calculating.

Money.
Housing.
Transportation.
Childcare.
Safety.
Their mood.
Your next move.
Whether today is a “good day.”
Whether saying the wrong thing could start something.
Whether you should stay.
Whether you can leave.

That is what survival can look like.

It can also look like:

• Constantly watching someone’s tone or facial expressions
• Feeling your body tense when you hear footsteps, keys, or a door open
• Replaying conversations to figure out what you did “wrong”
• Keeping the peace because confrontation feels unsafe
• Hiding money or important documents “just in case”
• Feeling guilty for spending anything on yourself
• Struggling to make long-term plans because you’re focused on getting through today
• Feeling exhausted even when you haven’t physically done much
• Forgetting things or having trouble concentrating because your mind is carrying so much
• Feeling like you can never completely relax
• Having an emergency plan running quietly in the back of your mind
• Thinking about leaving over and over but feeling overwhelmed by everything that would have to happen first

And one of the hardest parts?

You may live like this for so long that it begins to feel normal.

You may not even realize how much energy you’ve spent surviving until you finally experience a moment where you don’t have to calculate someone else’s reaction.

💜 So we want to ask you something:

Are you living… or are you surviving?

Do you spend more time thinking about how to keep everything from falling apart than thinking about what you actually want your life to look like?

If the answer is yes, you do not have to figure out every piece of your future today.

Sometimes the first step isn’t leaving.

Sometimes the first step is recognizing:

“I have been living in survival mode.”

And from there, you can begin learning what options, resources, support, and safety might look like for you.

💜 WHAT IS A SAFETY PLAN?
When people hear “domestic violence safety plan,” they often think it simply means making a plan to leave.

It’s much more than that.

A safety plan is a personalized plan created to help someone prepare for situations where abuse, threats, stalking, intimidation, or violence may occur.

A safety plan can be useful:

🌿 While you are still living with an abusive partner
🌿 If you are thinking about leaving
🌿 While you are preparing to leave
🌿 After the relationship has ended
🌿 If an abusive or controlling ex continues contacting, threatening, following, or monitoring you

There is no single safety plan that works for everyone. What makes one person safer could increase risk for someone else, which is why safety planning should be based on the survivor’s individual circumstances. (WomensLaw.org)

A safety plan might include things like:

• Identifying trusted people you can contact
• Knowing safer areas or exits in your home
• Creating a code word with someone you trust
• Knowing where you could go in an emergency
• Keeping important phone numbers accessible
• Thinking about the safety of children or pets
• Planning how to access medications, identification, money, keys, or important documents if needed
• Considering workplace, school, transportation, and childcare safety
• Reviewing phone, social media, location-sharing, passwords, and other technology safety
• Making a plan for unwanted contact, stalking, or harassment after separation

And sometimes a safety plan is simply knowing:

“If this happens, I already know what my next step will be.”

In moments of fear or crisis, it can be difficult to think through every option. Planning ahead can give someone more choices when they need them most. (The Hotline)

💜 Safety planning is not about blaming a survivor for preventing abuse. The person choosing to abuse is responsible for the abuse.

And safety planning does not mean someone has to be ready to leave today.

It means meeting them where they are and helping them think through what may make them safer.

If you or someone you know needs help creating an individualized safety plan, a domestic violence advocate can help confidentially.

⚠️ If you believe someone may be monitoring your phone, internet use, email, or location, consider using a safer device when accessing resources. Internet activity can sometimes be monitored. (The Hotline)

💜 You don’t have to have everything figured out before you ask for help.

💜 YOU DON’T HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL IT GETS WORSE TO ASK FOR HELP. Domestic violence is not limited to physical violence.
Abuse can include intimidation, threats, isolation, financial control, stalking, sexual coercion, monitoring, humiliation, manipulation, or making someone feel afraid inside their own home.

And you do not have to prove that what you’re experiencing is “bad enough” before reaching out for support.

⚠️ A reminder about technology safety:
If you believe someone may be monitoring your phone, browser history, email, social media, or other accounts, consider accessing resources from a safer device when possible.

Sometimes asking for help is the first step toward realizing how much you have been carrying alone.

You deserve to feel safe.
You deserve to have choices.
You deserve support without judgment.

And you deserve a life where love does not require fear. 💜

🧠💜 MENTAL HEALTH FACT FRIDAY: Abuse does not have to leave a bruise to leave trauma.
Domestic abuse can include much more than physical violence.

It can look like:
• Monitoring your phone, location, or social media
• Controlling who you see or talk to
• Using money to control your choices
• Threatening to leave, hurt you, hurt themselves, or take your children
• Constantly accusing you of cheating
• Humiliating, degrading, or intimidating you
• Punching walls, breaking things, or driving recklessly to scare you
• Using silence, affection, or basic needs as punishment
• Making you question your own memory or reality
• Making you feel like you have to constantly watch their mood to stay safe

Over time, living in an environment like this can affect the nervous system and mental health.

You may become hyperaware of someone’s tone, footsteps, facial expressions, texts, or changes in mood. You may apologize constantly, avoid conflict, second-guess yourself, shut down, or feel anxious even when nothing is happening.

And sometimes you don’t recognize how much fear you were living with until you finally experience peace.

💜 Healthy love should not require you to become smaller, quieter, easier to control, or constantly afraid of what happens next.

This October, Resilience Reclaimed Foundation will be talking more about domestic violence, abuse, trauma, survival, and what healing can look like after living in survival mode.

Because abuse deserves to be recognized, even when no one else can see the wounds.

✨If you or someone you know is experiencing any of these situations and need help, resources, a safety plan, or anything at all, please contact us. We will list resources in the comments.✨
