Camp Oljato

Oljato is a magical place! Camp Oljato (Ol-JAY–toe) was founded 1941. The Oljato summer camp program is very popular and is generally fully booked.

The name Oljato is Navajo meaning “Star Light on the Waters.” It is located at 7,000 feet in the Sierra’s (Kaiser Peak Range) on the shores of Huntington Lake. Access to the heavily wooded camp requires a one-mile boat trip across the picturesque lake. From the moment of arrival to the last day of camp, participants are immersed in outdoor adventure. Oljato accommodates approximately 350 scouts, a

dult leaders and camp staff during each of the six week long summer sessions. Waterfront activities are a key element of the Camp Oljato experience. Huntington Lake is a well-known sailing lake and Oljato is fortunate to have one of the most sheltered coves on the lake. This location allows scouts to learn and explore on comparatively calm waters. During a week at summer camp, virtually all camp participants engage in several waterfront activities. Additionally, the camp has magnificent giant pines and plenty of wildflowers with a mountain stream and no poison oak. There are platform tents within the eleven variable sized campsites. Each site has running water, tables & fire rings. Restrooms & showers are located nearby. In the center of camp the Trading Post and rustic Dining Hall can be found. Surrounding these buildings are our newly constructed premiere program structures and areas for Nature, Scoutcraft, Handicraft, and Waterfront that have all been completed in the last 7 years. Due to popular demand the new Latrine and shower house with individual stalls were added as well as the Health lodge and Cooks Cabin. We hope that you will truly enjoy the benefits of these incredible program areas. The unique Lucy Stern Stone Lodge overlooks the lake and surrounding property and we encourage the campers to visit this important piece of the camp's history.

Star Float! One of Camp Oljato’s signature programs. Three of our barges take our scouts out on the lake for a night of stargazing, mythology, and hot chocolate under the stars. There is really nothing like it. What are you doing this summer?

Camp Oljato sits on Huntington Lake, and at 7000 feet it is one of the top sailing lakes in the western US. We are fortunate to have such a setting to offer our Sailing Merit Badge program and free sail opportunities.

In case you didn’t know already, Oljato is translated from Navajo, meaning “moonlight” or “starlight on the water”. We are fortunate to have some of the most spectacular skies in the Sierras (or anywhere for that matter). Come see them for yourself!

Silver Spur Corral! Our newest area at Camp Oljato. Welding and Metalworking MB's, roping, sand painting, candle making, and other activities. And to top it off is Western Wednesdays, with a night campfire with hot apple c***r cooked over the fire, fresh cobbler cooked over the coals, and songs around fire.

6:30am Polar Bear Swim! Pretty good turnout considering the chilly weather. Any excuse for hot cocoa! Jump in the lake and recite the Scout Oath and Law. Great way to start the day at camp!

Olympicade! A Camp Oljato tradition for decades. Two person log saw, speed sculpture, steer roping, scoutmaster mini golf, many other crazy things, all culminating with the Pentathlon! And how do you cap that off? With a scoutmaster run steak bbq for all. You really can’t beat that!

As we prepare to welcome our first campers of the summer this Sunday, we're celebrating a gift that will help make Camp Oljato more accessible for years to come.

Thanks to a generous gift from the James family, Camp Oljato now has a new Polaris UTV dedicated to transporting guests with mobility challenges throughout camp. From program areas to campfires, this vehicle will help ensure more Scouts, Scouters, family members, and visitors can fully experience everything Oljato has to offer.

The outdoors should be for everyone, and gifts like this help make that vision a reality.
