On this day in 1919 the first American Legion caucus was held by members of the American Expeditionary Force, convening in Paris. War-weary members of the American Expeditionary Forces gathered for a “morale conference” that led to the creation of what would become The American Legion.
As we celebrate our 107th birthday, we offer thanks to all former and current members for keeping us going strong in our mission to serve the nation’s veterans, our military and their families, and our communities.

We are hosting a Touch-a-Truck event on 10/18 at the Stockport Town Park, from 9 until 11 am.

We would like to have a few more vehicles for the kids to be “wowed” by.

Anyone interested in bringing a large truck or unique vehicle?

It’s with great sadness that we announce Past District Commander (and longtime Chatham Post 42 Commander) James Garvey passed away yesterday! He was a 35 year member of The American Legion, and was a member of our SAL Squadron 184.

Jim, a Navy veteran, served many years as post and Columbia County Commander and most recently as Third District Commander & District Adjutant. He also served on various committees at the state and national level and was a leader in the Chatham Fire Department.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time.

RIP Comrade & Friend!

HUDSON LEGIONNAIRE ERIC DE KRAAI ELECTED DEPARTMENT VICE COMMANDER FOR 3rd & 4th DISTRICTS

Syracuse, NY — July 19, 2025 — Hudson Legionnaire Eric De Kraai was elected Department Vice Commander for the Third and Fourth Districts of the Department of New York American Legion during the organization’s 107th annual state convention held Saturday in Syracuse.

De Kraai was also recognized for his leadership in membership. Thanks to his dedication and support from Legionnaires across Columbia County, they reached 100% membership five years straight.

Joining De Kraai in Syracuse were fellow Legionnaires Richard Morris and Jeffrey French of Philmont Post 252, along with Jim Garvey and Harvey McCagg of Chatham Post 42.
