Even when abuse is not directed at them, children can still experience fear, anxiety, confusion, and trauma from living in unsafe environments. The effects can impact their emotional well being, development, relationships, and sense of security long after the violence ends.

Recognizing children as secondary victims is an important step toward healing, support, and breaking the cycle of abuse. 💜

Chronic stress from living in a violent home can impact childhood brain development.

When children are exposed to ongoing fear, conflict, or instability, their developing brains and bodies can remain in a constant state of stress. Over time, this can affect emotional regulation, learning, memory, behavior, and overall health.

Safe, stable, and supportive environments play an important role in helping children heal and thrive. 💜

This year’s Family Violence Prevention and Services Act ( ) funding should have begun on October 1, 2025. But the funding notices haven’t even been released yet.

Additionally, some Office on Violence Against Women ( ) grants were also supposed to begin on October 1, 2025. More than seven months into the grant year, award notices haven’t been released, leaving programs in limbo and forced to lay off staff and reduce or eliminate grant-funded services for survivors

These delays jeopardize programs and victims. Congress must take immediate action.

Domestic violence shelters, r**e crisis centers, and other programs have been experiencing federal funding delays. Additional delays will force programs to lay off staff, reduce services, and close their doors, leaving survivors with nowhere to go.

Congress must push for the DOJ and HHS to immediately publish NOFOs and expedite the release of congressionally appropriated funds. Survivors and programs can't wait.
