We have important news to share.
This season Beautiful Racket will be transitioning away from leading the Hudson Community Choir program. Instead, serving as fiscal sponsor while the choir becomes its own entity.
For over 3 years this choir has meant so much to so many. We started out bigger than any of us could have expected and just kept growing - and to that end we succeeded in creating a sacred community space where singers of all abilities and from all walks of life could come together to share music and singing.
But, we did not meet the goal our work is rooted in. We did not see a real change in engagement and access for the Black community.
That distinction is important to us. The choir’s growth and the community it created are meaningful accomplishments, but they are not the measure of the work Beautiful Racket was founded to do.
Beautiful Racket is a creative arts organization founded to dismantle systemic barriers preventing Black communities from accessing the power of creative arts. Our work asks us to continually examine whether what we are building is actually moving us closer to that purpose - and to be honest when it isn’t.
We wish Hudson Community Choir much success as they embark on their own journey of establishing themselves as a true blue choir, retaining the founding principles of access for all singers. Check out their new instagram page: Hudson Community Choir NY for fall season registration (up now!).
We are grateful for the lessons we’ve learned, the eyes we’ve opened to the work of Reparations reform, and the community we’ve gained. Stay tuned here for upcoming announcements on what’s next for Beautiful Racket and ways to support our continued journey toward reparative creative arts.
