STORM RESPONSE & GENERATOR SAFETY

Between approximately 11:00 PM and 7:00 AM, Howell Area Fire Department A Shift, along with our paid-on-call members, responded to approximately 70 calls for service in just eight hours.

Calls ranged from electrical hazards and downed trees to carbon monoxide/gas leaks, fuel spills, structural collapses, and other storm-related emergencies.

As cleanup and power restoration efforts continue, we want to remind everyone about generator safety:

• Always operate generators outdoors — never inside a home, garage, basement, or other enclosed structure.
• Keep generators at least 20 feet away from all structures.
• Always point the generator’s exhaust away from buildings, doors, windows, and vents.
• Maintain at least 5 feet of clear space around the entire generator.
• Make sure your home has working carbon monoxide detectors.

Carbon monoxide is colorless and odorless and can quickly become deadly. If your CO alarm activates or you suspect carbon monoxide in your home, get everyone outside immediately and call 911.

We appreciate the patience and cooperation of our community as emergency crews, utility workers, and public works personnel continue responding to the impacts of the storm.

Stay safe, Howell!

Were you curious what your professional firefighters were doing at 2am this morning? Wondering why there were so much traffic delays? What all those sirens were for, no matter where you were in the county? Well we were all likely responding to the same structure fire, Great Lakes Meats on Highland (M-59)road had a fire in a secondary building where they kept a lot of their storage. Upon arrival crews found a large building which had been fully involved. Crews were originally dispatched to a outdoor fire that was then reconfigured to a Structure Fire while enroute. Crews on scene upgraded to a second alarm and eventually a third alarm which included the following departments: Brighton Area Fire Authority Hartland Deerfield Fire Authority Fowlerville Area Fire Department "41" - Central Station Green Oak Firefighters Milford Fire Department Highland Township Fire and brought our friends in Putnam Township Fire Department to cover at our main station providing coverage for our jurisdiction. We thank all of you for coming and assisting our crews as it was a team effort and couldn’t have been done without you. Great news from all of this, Great Lakes Meats will still be operating as usual! So no need to cancel your trip to their store!
