NOTE: no animals are in this enclosure.

LRWR is in a bit of a bind, with our largest enclosure completely flooded and unusable. We truly need to add a roof to this enclosure and now we need to do a bit of damage control.

If you, friends or family have the knowledge or resources to build a roof, we could use your assistance and quickly.

Please also consider donating to help fund the materials needed to keep our animals safe from Michigan’s harsh weather.

In continuation of our opie appreciation week, we have a release update on our beloved Krispy, the opossum who came to LRWR with severe frostbite late this winter. After a lengthy rehabilitation, Krispy was successfully returned to the wild last week. Join us in wishing him the best of luck on his new adventure!!! Here’s a recap of his journey💛

Did you know: The opossum is North America’s only marsupial? Like their kangaroo cousins, females have a pouch to carry their young for protection.. Unlike kangaroos, that is nearly the extent of the opossum’s defense mechanisms. When cornered by a predator they are known to ‘play opossum’ or fake being dead, by laying down and emitting an odor similar to that of deceased animals.

While some may consider opies to be the ugly step-sister to our raccoon friends, with their nocturnal scavenging techniques, climbing skills, and opposable thumbs for dexterity, opossums and raccoons are actually very similar!

Large update post. We’ve been busy at LRWR! Yesterday’s intake is doing great and starting to be interested in the watered down formula.

Our intake from April 2 (Tinkerbell) is gaining weight, but was very emaciated on intake so it’ll take her a while to fill out.

Our four little snug bugs are doing absolutely fantastic.

Not pictured: two of our newest nuggets (about a week old) being stabilized now.

At LRWR we understand how cute baby animals are, but please do not intervene with nature unless completely necessary!! As our rescue gears up for baby season, we’ve created this flyer to help you determine the best next steps if/when you come across an unaccompanied baby in your yard.

Understanding and respecting the vital role these animals play in our ecosystem promotes a healthy environment and allows us to better coexist. Your donations help us keep wildlife the way nature intended, wild. Please consider donating to our cause today!

Update posts:
Gus is getting some outdoor playtime while patiently waiting for his new littermates to pass quarantine.

Krispy (the frostbite opossum) is in his outdoor enclosure getting used to a bigger space and foraging before he is cleared for release!

(Bonus picture is Gus just being adorable)

Six more intakes this weekend. These babies are pretty new but not the smallest LRWR has saved. They were fussy over the first few feeds, but have started taking quite well to the special formula. Reminder, when you encounter baby wildlife, please do not feed! Google states KMR is good enough, but due to recent formula changes, it causes GI issues and dehydration.

Wildlife rehabbers can save emaciated and dehydrated babies, but sometimes it is difficult to reverse the effects of incorrect feeding/wrong formula.

This finder did amazing in telling me everything I needed to know about these guys leading to a safe, healthy transition into rehab. Thank you for caring 💜

Newest addition to LRWR. These sweet babies are off the ground (no ability for reunite, 35 degree weather in a heavy foot traffic area) and in a warm incubator.

It’s officially baby season here at Little Rascals. These guys will be perfect littermates for Gus once they’re stabilized and quarantined.

Absolutely no judgement to the finder, but we have to remind everyone to humanely evict! Do not relocated animals, it’s a death sentence to begin with, but during baby season, there is a larger risk of leaving behind orphans.

Rehabs are free and can give you valuable tips to keep your home pest free, while being mindful of our native wildlife.

Please consider donating, it can cost hundreds of dollars just to rehab a single kit.
