🚤 National Safe Boating Week starts today!

Before you head out on the water, remember the most important piece of boating safety equipment: your life jacket.

Most boating fatalities occur because someone wasn’t wearing one. Life jackets only work if you wear them — so make it a habit every time you’re on the water.

✔ Wear it
✔ Zip it
✔ Enjoy the ride safely

Grace Kotalik has been selected as Sam Houston Area Council Sea Scout Boatswain for 2026-2027 and will assume the watch on June 1. Grace will be introduced at 7 p.m., Wed., May 20th, at the SHAC Fleet meeting at the Cockrell Scout Center. She will host a Salty Brownie Hut, where participants can make their own brownies, to mark the start of her watch and help chart the course for the year ahead.

Grace has served at the helm as Boatswain of Sea Scout Ship 777 in the George Strake District, where she helped lead the ship’s program and train youth officers while growing membership. In addition to her Sea Scout leadership, Grace is proud to serve as a Fishing’s Future Angler Ambassador encouraging youth participation in fishing, conservation, and stewardship through mentorship, outreach, and hands-on experiences in memory of her brother, U.S. Army Specialist Jarrett Kotalik, an avid fisherman and Eagle Scout who passed away in active duty military service.

An Eagle Scout and Brotherhood member of the Order of the Arrow, Grace supports Scouting across programs as the George Strake District Order of the Arrow Chapter Elections Chair, an active mentor with Family Troop 777, and a Venturing leader who has earned the Discovery, Trust, and Quest Awards.

Beyond Scouting, she serves her community through the Texas Laurels Chapter of the National Charity League, her church’s youth ministry, and service projects that support military families as a Gold Star sister.

Six Sea Scout ships were represented in La Porte on Sunday during Fleet Week Houston activities at Sylvan Beach.
Sea Scouts had a Raingutter Regatta, where youth made their own boats to race. And there were two sailboats to view as well as competitive ring buoy toss games.
Military bands played songs throughout the event, to give the day a patriotic flavor.
Sea Scout youth were able to tell more than 50 people about Sea Scouts and how to join.
Sea Scout leadership was able to talk to members of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary at Sylvan Beach. Sea Scouts are the official youth organization of the Coast Guard Auxiliary.

The Zoom contact info is:
Zoom Meeting ID: 944 626 6219; Passcode: beascout
Zoom link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/9446266219...

The remaining in-person meetings for the Fleet this year -- all on Wednesdays -- are:
May 20
Sept. 16
Dec. 16 (savory pot-luck awards dinner)
The other meetings will be Zoom only. We meet the third Wednesday of each month, except June and July. We do not meet in June or July, as people are on vacation, working summer camps, on Long Cruise, etc.

Also, my hard drive crashed, and I have been able only to retrieve about 25 percent of my information. Among the missing info are my Outlook lists of Sea Scout emails. If you recently did not receive an email from me about the inaugural Fleet Week Houston, then I have not recovered your email. Please send me an email to update the Sea Scout data base.

The Fleet Week info is that Ship 208 has secured a booth for us from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sun., April 19, at the Sylvan Beach Naval Showcase, 636 N. Bayshore Dr., La Porte, 77571. We need workers to run the booth, so all will be able to participate in the activities. Sailors from the U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard and the Marines will perform in La Porte.
This is a very important recruiting event for us. Please RSVP yes or no about participating in Fleet Week Houston on Sunday, so we know you have seen this.

SHAC Sea Scouts assisted with Cub Scout Adventure Camp on Saturday at Bovay Scout Ranch. Sea Scouts ran four Raingutter Regatta races with wooden boats for the 900 who were registered for the event.
The campout was part of a series of events to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Bovay Scout Ranch.

From Gordon Start:

OJ's Marina has bottom paint donated a few years ago.
First: The paint is aging, and should be used soon, if possible.
Second: They are rebuilding their storage and need the space (or the clear space for work).
So, they would like for the Sea Scouts to help clear out their storage and make ready for their rebuild.

I can be available to pick up the paint Friday or Saturday (my schedule is still in flux) and put in my storage for a bit, but if any ship is in need of bottom paint, we should use these donated gallons before they go bad.

I understand most gallons are green, but a bit of blue if people have a colour preference.

SHAC Sea Scouts have been invited to participate in the inaugural Fleet Week Houston activities by having a booth from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sun., April 19, at the Sylvan Beach Naval Showcase, 636 N. Bayshore Dr., La Porte, 77571. Thanks to Verine Cheesbro for setting this up. Ship 208 is scheduled to work the booth, but other ships in SHAC are needed to assist so Sea Scouts can rotate between work and viewing the events.
Organizers are asking for a map that shows where SHAC ships are located. We also can bring a raingutter regatta or a small sailboat on a trailer.
As part of Fleet Week Houston, this event will have representatives of the U.S. Navy, Coast Guard and Marines at Sylvan Beach Park for a one-day Naval Showcase. The activities include:
*LCAC Amphibious Demo: Watch the massive Navy Hovercraft (Landing Craft Air Cushion) hit the beach!
*USCG Search & Rescue: See the Coast Guard’s life-saving maneuvers in action over the water.
*Military Band Performances: Enjoy live, patriotic sets from three world class bands.
*Military Working Dogs: Witness the incredible skill and discipline of these K9 heroes.
*Static Displays: Get hands-on with cutting-edge military equipment, vehicles and tech.
To let representatives of Ship 208 know you want to participate, please contact Verine at [email protected], or Jenny Clayberg at [email protected]. Or text 850-748-3826 or 713-859-0669.
