Greetings. The August SHAC Sea Scout Fleet meeting is at 7 p.m., Wed., Aug. 19. It has been two months since we met, so we have a few things to catch up on.
An agenda will go out in the next couple of days via email. I lost a lot of my emails earlier this year with a hard-drive crash. Please send me your email to [email protected] if you have not been getting messages.

One of the ways to promote Sea Scouts is to attend meetings of other programs in your Council.
Sea Scouts attended the Colonneh Lodge Order of the Arrow planning meeting on Saturday at the Cockrell Scout Center. Part of the Sea Scout Student Quarterdeck handed out information about Sea Scouts and how to join.

Two members of the SHAC Sea Scout Quarterdeck visited the George Strake District Roundtable on Thursday night to explain Sea Scouts to the participants. They were Grace K. and Ben T.
The two passed out lifesaver candy (a nice touch for those involved with the sea) and flyers. Hopefully that visit will result in more Sea Scouts in SHAC.

It's time to sign up for Minto Rendezvous Skills Competition -- with a live Battleship game. The link to sign up is:

Council representatives recently told me they want to plan ahead for Minto -- to purchase food and get workers on-site -- so we have to have registration money in by Aug. 25. We have to have 50 people signed up by Aug. 25.

We have moved Minto to Labor Day Weekend, which is Sat-Sun-Mon, Sept. 5-6-7, at Bovay Scout Ranch near Navasota to get more people to participate. We think this will allow people the time to drive from all over the state to participate.
In addition to the skills competition, the SHAC Quarterdeck will host a live Battleship game with water balloons.
Participants drive to Bovay on Saturday, and after checking in, create a boat on Saturday night. Boats can look like a Battleship, or a PT cruiser, or a destroyer, or whatever. Each boat is made out of cardboard. Cardboard will be provided, or you can bring your own cardboard.
The Battleship game will be Sunday night after the annual competition. Teams will throw water balloons over a wall and try to hit the boats on the other side, which cannot be seen.
To quote Robin, from Batman and Robin: Zoinks. Sounds fun.

The High Adventure wing of SHAC initiated an event that looks like it will bring in more high school and college-aged youth into the programs.
The "Outwit the Tide Trek" is for Sea Scouts and Venturing, and was set up in a format like the TV Show, "Survivor." The older youths had canoe races, played water-related games, worked on 3-D puzzles and many other items. The idea was to allow participants to grow closer and form friendships, as well as have a non-traditional event that brings more youth into the High Adventure wing of Scouting in Greater Houston.
The event was a great success, as approximately 40 youth participated. The plan is to do it again next year during the August Aquatics Summit.
Thanks to SHAC Sea Scout Boatswain Grace K., who also is the vice president of administration in SHAC's VOA, for planning and putting the event on. She was assisted by the SHAC Sea Scout Quarterdeck (Ben T., Cait T., and Audrey T.) as well as the SHAC VOA (Reed K., Kiana C. and Will B).

Another highly successful Aquatics Summit took place at Camp Strake on Aug. 7-9. The sold-out event had approximately 450 from troops who participated in water-related merit badges like small boat sailing and swimming. Others participated in merit badges like chess and nature.
A Search and Rescue team also came and made a presentation to troops.
Thanks to Dawn Kotalik, committee chair for Ship 777 in The Woodlands, for coordinating the event.

Congrats to Ted Hunn of the Sam Houston Area Council, who given a SHAC Commodore’s Award on Saturday at Camp Strake. The award was presented by SHAC Sea Scout Commodore Neal Farmer, and the award is nicknamed “The Farmie.” Ted is camp director at Camp Strake near Coldspring.
Ted has been around Sea Scouts a long time with his father, Bill, who was a Sea Scout skipper. Ted has gone out of his way to assist Sea Scouts and its program over the years.
Congrats on the Farmie.
