🌻 Summer Grief Truth Time | Part 6: Losing My Grandmother, Ernie

At 16 years old, I experienced another heartbreaking loss.

I lost my grandmother, Ernie, due to complications from asthma.

Sixteen is an age when you’re trying to figure out who you are, dreaming about the future, and believing the people you love will always be there. I wasn’t prepared to say goodbye to someone who had been such an important part of my life.

Her passing taught me that grief doesn’t wait until we’re adults. It finds us in childhood, in our teenage years, and in seasons when we least expect it.

There are still moments when I think about the conversations we never got to have, the milestones she didn’t get to witness, and how much I wish she could have seen the woman I’ve become.

But I also carry the love she gave me.

I’ve learned that while death ends a life, it doesn’t end the impact someone has on us. The values they instilled, the memories they created, and the love they shared continue to shape who we become.

As I look back over my life, I can see that every loss deepened my compassion for others. I didn’t know it then, but God was preparing my heart to walk alongside people carrying their own grief.

The people we love leave a legacy in us. The question is: What legacy are we leaving in others?

🌻 Summer Grief Truth Time | Part 5: Before We Could Catch Our Breath

Sometimes grief doesn’t come one time.

Sometimes it keeps coming.

Just one week after our senior year ended, another classmate lost his life.

Both of these classmates died in separate car accidents.

Two young lives.

Two families forever changed.

Two reminders that tomorrow isn’t promised.

As a young adult, I found myself asking questions that many of us ask after loss:

Why?

Why so young?

Why now?

Those losses didn’t just affect their families, they affected classmates, teachers, friends, and an entire community.

I’ve learned that every person leaves a ripple behind. The way we love, encourage, forgive, and show up for others becomes part of the story we leave behind.

What will be your story between the dash?

Summer Grief Truth Time | Part 4: We Were Almost Graduates

Senior year is supposed to be filled with celebration.

Caps.
Gowns.
Pictures.
Graduation.
The future.

Instead, just weeks before graduation, I lost one of my classmates,a childhood friend.

We had grown up together, expecting to walk across the graduation stage together.

But life had different plans.

Grief has a way of interrupting milestones.

Moments that should be filled with joy suddenly carry the weight of absence.

Even now, I think about the dreams that were never fulfilled and the life that ended far too soon.

Those moments remind me not to take the people around me,or the opportunities before me,for granted.

🌻 Summer Grief Truth Time | Part 3: A Life Changed in an Instant

By the time I reached seventh grade, grief visited again.

This time, I lost a classmate in a tragic freak accident.

There are some losses that leave you asking, “How could this happen?”

As a young teenager, I began to understand that life isn’t guaranteed, not because someone is sick, but because unexpected moments can change everything.

That experience taught me something I still carry today:

Tomorrow is a gift, not a promise.

We spend so much time planning for “someday” that we sometimes forget to fully live today.

Grief has a way of reminding us to treasure the people we love while we still have the opportunity.

💜 Join us tomorrow at 7:30 PM for Bloom Room as we discuss “What Do You Want Your Life to Say?”

If your story ended today, what would people remember most?

🌻 Summer Grief Truth Time | Part 2: Grief Entered My Classroom

I was only in second grade when I experienced something no child expects.

One of my classmates passed away after battling a brain tumor.

At that age, I didn’t fully understand illness or death. I just knew that one day a classmate was there… and then they weren’t.

As children, we often don’t have the language to express grief. We carry questions we can’t answer and emotions we don’t know how to name.

Looking back, I realize this was another moment that shaped my understanding of how fragile life truly is. It also reminds me why children need safe spaces to talk about grief, not just adults.

Every loss leaves an imprint.

Every story matters.

💜 Join us tomorrow at 7:30 PM for Bloom Room, our virtual discussion, as we explore “What Do You Want Your Life to Say?”

Because while we can’t choose how long we’ll live, we can choose the legacy we leave.
