Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month | Daniel N. Ramirez

Today, HisBA is proud to spotlight Daniel N. Ramirez, Named Partner at Monty & Ramirez LLP.

Daniel’s family is from Chihuahua, Mexico, and he grew up in El Paso, where Mexican and West Texas cultures were woven together in everyday life. Spanish, border traditions, food, and family all shaped his upbringing.

As a first-generation student, Daniel did not initially see law school as part of his future. A college professor and attorney changed that by encouraging him to take the possibility seriously and helping him through the application process. That mentorship opened new doors and helped set Daniel on the path to the legal profession.

Today, Daniel carries that experience forward through his own service and mentorship. He serves on the HisBA Board and volunteers with Hispanic National Bar Association - HNBA and Dallas Hispanic Bar Association at the local and national levels, supporting Latino legal initiatives and mentoring law students.

But the values that continue to guide him came first from home.

His parents and grandparents from Chihuahua taught him to work hard, be honest, and stay humble.

Dos culturas. Una identidad.

This Hispanic Heritage Month, HisBA is proud to celebrate Daniel, his family, and the border community that helped shape his journey.

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month | David Neal Calvillo

Fe. Educación. Servicio.

Today, HisBA is proud to spotlight David Neal Calvillo, Partner at Nelson Mullins.

David’s parents were the first in their families to graduate from college and earn graduate degrees, and as educators, they instilled in David and his siblings the importance of education, faith, hard work, and never forgetting where they came from.

Those values guided David from a career in public accounting into the legal profession, where one of his proudest accomplishments has been earning board certification in civil trial law after years of sustained trial work and perseverance.

David has also made service a constant throughout his career. In addition to serving his church as a lector and Eucharistic minister, he has held leadership roles with the State Bar of Texas Board of Directors, the Texas Bar Foundation Board of Trustees, the Hispanic Issues Section, and the Hispanic National Bar Association - HNBA.

He also credits Texas Supreme Court Justice Raul Gonzalez, a fellow Rio Grande Valley native, as a longtime mentor who helped guide him toward law school and later swore him into the profession.

David’s story is one of education, perseverance, faith, and service carried forward across generations.

A legacy passed down. A responsibility carried forward.

HisBA is proud to celebrate David this Hispanic Heritage Month.

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month | Marisa V. Leon

Today, the Hispanic Bar Association of Houston is proud to spotlight Marisa V. Leon, a first-generation Mexican American attorney whose story reflects resilience, community, and the courage to keep pursuing new dreams.

With family roots in Morelia, Michoacán, Marisa grew up watching her parents build a life in a new country. Their work ethic and perseverance shaped the determination she carries into her own career.

As a personal injury attorney, Marisa says her background helps her build immediate confianza with clients. Sharing language, culture, and lived experience allows her to help bridge the gaps many clients face when navigating the legal system.

Her own journey has required that same resilience. Marisa raised two children as a single mother while building her legal career, and at 54 years old, she opened her own personal injury law firm.

Her story is a reminder that there is no single timeline for success.

Marisa has also spent years giving back to the legal community through mentorship and service. She served as President of the Hispanic Bar Association of Houston in 2017, has served on HisBA’s Board of Directors, and has received the organization’s President’s Award five times. She is also involved with Somos Latinas, an organization dedicated to building opportunity, inspiration, and community for Latina lawyers.

And through it all, Morelia remains an important part of her family’s story.

Marisa remembers traveling there every summer with her parents to visit family. Today, she brings her own children so they can experience the same culture, traditions, and connection to their heritage. One of their favorite memories is watching the fireworks illuminate the Catedral de Morelia.

It is never too late to chase the dream your roots prepared you for.

HisBA is proud to celebrate Marisa, her journey, and the legacy she continues to build for the next generation.

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month | Sergio V. Leal

Today, the Hispanic Bar Association of Houston is proud to spotlight Sergio Valentin Leal, Head of Compliance & Regulatory Programs at Fervo Energy, HisBA Past President and longtime leader in Houston’s legal community.

For Sergio, his Mexican heritage is rooted in responsibility, perseverance, and opportunity.

He credits the sacrifices and dreams of the generations before him with shaping the way he approaches both his career and his service to others. For Sergio, professional success is not simply personal achievement; it carries an obligation to create opportunities, give back, and help strengthen the communities around him.

That perspective has guided a legal career centered on integrity and service. Sergio has worked on significant anti-corruption and compliance matters involving the DOJ and SEC, helping companies strengthen cultures of integrity, address misconduct, and meet regulatory expectations across borders.

His commitment to service extends well beyond his professional role. Sergio has served in leadership positions throughout Houston’s legal, civic, and nonprofit communities, including as HisBA President, while continuing to mentor young lawyers and support the next generation of leaders.

But one of the memories that best captures what heritage means to him is much simpler.

Growing up, Sergio visited his abuelita Lucia in Matamoros, where Sunday mornings meant the smell of freshly made flour tortillas and a breakfast of huevos y frijoles. No matter how many years passed, the tradition remained.

Through those Sunday mornings, Sergio says he learned the value of consistency, generosity, and taking care of the people around you.

Heritage is not only what we inherit. It is what we practice, preserve, and pass on.

HisBA is proud to celebrate Sergio and the leadership, service, and sense of responsibility he continues to bring to our profession and community.

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month | Lisa Luz Parker

Today, the Hispanic Bar Association of Houston is proud to spotlight Lisa Luz Parker, Division Director of Appellate & Civil Rights at the Harris County Attorney’s Office.

For Lisa, Hispanic Heritage Month is deeply personal.

Her father came to the United States from Mexico with a third-grade education, carrying with him determination, resilience, and the hope of building a better life for his family. His perseverance has shaped the way Lisa approaches her own journey as the first in her family to attend law school.

Lisa’s career has taken her from legal aid to Big Law, to a federal clerkship with U.S. District Judge Nelva Gonzales Ramos, and now to public service. Throughout it all, she has remained grounded in the opportunities made possible by the sacrifices of those who came before her.

Today, Lisa continues that legacy through service. She serves as a Director of the Texas Young Lawyers Association, mentors law students through HisBA and her law school, and co-hosts TYLA’s Spanish-language podcast to help attorneys strengthen their Spanish skills.

But the person she most wants to honor is her father — a true vaquero who dreamed of attending law school himself.

Though his formal education was limited, Lisa says his wisdom and lessons continue to guide her every day as a lawyer.

His dream. Her journey. Their legacy.

This Hispanic Heritage Month, we are proud to celebrate Lisa, her father, and the generations of sacrifice, perseverance, and opportunity that shape our community.

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month | George Díaz-Arrastía

Today, the Hispanic Bar Association of Houston proudly recognizes George Díaz-Arrastía, Partner at Schirrmeister Diaz-Arrastia Brem LLP and HisBA Board Member, whose career reflects decades of leadership in Houston and across borders.

George was recently selected to serve as U.S. Chair of the U.S.-Mexico Bar Association for 2027–2028, continuing a longstanding commitment to building stronger connections between the legal communities of the United States and Mexico.

For more than four decades, George has represented companies and individuals in complex business disputes at both the trial and appellate levels, with experience spanning commercial, international, construction, real estate, insurance and other matters. He has also remained actively involved in organizations supporting Houston’s legal and Hispanic communities.

His leadership is a reminder that Hispanic heritage is not only something we celebrate — it is something we carry forward through service, mentorship and the bridges we build for others.

Construyendo puentes. Abriendo caminos.

Congratulations, George, on this exciting new chapter of leadership. HisBA is proud to celebrate you during Hispanic Heritage Month.
