🇺🇸 A part of Memorial Day history many people were never taught:

On May 1st, 1865, thousands of newly freed Black men, women, and children in Charleston, South Carolina gathered to honor fallen Union soldiers, including African American soldiers who fought against slavery.

Many of those soldiers had been buried without dignity.

So the Black community stepped in.

They gave the soldiers proper burials, held a memorial procession, and helped shape what would become one of the earliest Memorial Day observances in American history.

Today, we honor ALL who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to this country, while also remembering the fuller history behind the holiday. 🇺🇸
