The Invisible Wounds
In 1998, the CDC and Kaiser Permanente published one of the most important public health studies of the last century. They called it the ACE Study — Adverse Childhood Experiences. And what it uncovered, Scripture had already whispered long before: the wounds of childhood do not stay in childhood.
The study found a direct, measurable relationship between early trauma and adult suffering. The more a child endured — abuse, neglect, a home fractured by violence or addiction or a parent behind bars — the greater their risk, decades later, for depression, addiction, disease, incarceration, and homelessness.
These aren't rare experiences. But for the men and women living beneath Houston's bridges, they are nearly universal.
A study of homeless individuals in South Central Texas found that participants reported high levels of all three forms of childhood abuse — emotional, physical, and sexual — directly linked to both PTSD and Complex PTSD.
Here is what those clinical terms are really describing: a child who was never safe grows into an adult whose whole body is still bracing for the next blow. Always scanning. Never resting. Unable to trust even the hand that reaches out to help — because every hand that reached for them before left a mark.
Scripture is tender with exactly these wounds. "He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds," the psalmist writes (Psalm 147:3) — and the Hebrew there is not poetry about hurt feelings. It's the language of a physician wrapping a gash that will not close on its own. God does not rush the crushed. He binds. He tends. He stays near the wound until it can bear to be touched.
That is the pattern we try to follow at Hope Beyond Bridges. Our volunteers are trained not to be offended by mistrust, not to flinch at anger, not to walk away when someone isn't ready. Because we understand that the mistrust is the wound talking — and the wound was never their fault.
So we stay. Week after week. Year after year. For people who have only ever known abandonment, faithful presence is not a nicety. It is medicine. It may be the first glimpse they ever get of a love that does not leave.
