The Board of Directors of Freedom Business Alliance announces the upcoming departure of our Executive Director, Karen Schmidt.

In her own words, “After an incredible season of building, connection, and collaboration, I have discerned that my season as the Executive Director for the Freedom Business Alliance has come to an end. This decision was not made lightly, but with deep reflection and conviction.

We’ve laid a powerful foundation, and I am genuinely to see the next leader build upon it and take the Freedom Business movement to new heights. I’m incredibly proud of our small but mighty team and deeply grateful to our members, whose work is creating lasting change.”

Karen has been a steadfast advocate for the global freedom business movement. Her leadership has led to vital partnerships with anti-trafficking and philanthropic allies, geographic expansion across Europe and Africa, and the development of practical tools that equip businesses to offer dignified employment to survivors of human trafficking.

Under Karen’s guidance, FBA grew into an organization ready to influence the mainstream business sector. Her collaboration with the Christian Economic Forum culminated in the forthcoming launch of WellWork, a training platform designed to multiply safe employment opportunities around the world. She also prioritized survivor leadership to advise FBA’s programming and launched a pro-bono legal support network to serve our members.

We are deeply grateful for her service and the legacy of purpose she leaves behind. As we begin the process of identifying new leadership, we invite you to join us in honoring Karen’s impact. The mission of FBA endures, and we remain committed to advancing economic solutions to human trafficking through the vibrant work of our members around the globe.

Strong policies are essential for creating a trauma-informed, healing-centered workplace because they:

1. Establish Safety and Trust
Policies set clear expectations and consistent boundaries, which are foundational for psychological safety—especially for people who have experienced trauma. They help build trust between staff and leadership by ensuring that everyone knows how situations like conflict, discrimination, or harm will be handled.

2. Ensure Accountability
Trauma-informed care isn’t just about being compassionate—it requires systems of accountability. Strong policies reinforce that everyone is responsible for upholding values like respect, inclusion, and equity, and that harm will be addressed, not ignored.

3. Prevent Re-traumatization
Without clear protocols, workplaces can unintentionally replicate patterns of harm or trigger trauma responses. Strong policies guide how the organization handles issues like discipline, feedback, or crisis response in a way that avoids shaming, punishing, or isolating people.

4. Promote Equity and Inclusion
Healing-centered work environments need to center marginalized voices. Policies that address power dynamics, anti-racism, gender equity, and accessibility create conditions where all staff—especially those who carry historical or systemic trauma—can thrive.

5. Support Organizational Culture
Culture is shaped by what’s tolerated, encouraged, and supported. Trauma-informed policies reinforce a culture of empathy, care, and well-being, helping to embed these values into everyday operations, not just individual behaviors.

6. Enable Consistent Responses
A trauma-informed workplace needs more than good intentions—it needs infrastructure. Policies provide a consistent framework for handling leave, accommodations, conflict resolution, and support systems like EAPs or wellness programs.

🌍 This week at the European Freedom Network conference in Horn, Austria, FBA Board Chair Dr. Lauren Pinkston delivered a powerful keynote and breakout session on why safe, dignified jobs are essential in the fight against human trafficking.

Her message was clear: economic crimes demand economic solutions! When people have access to meaningful work, the cycle of exploitation breaks.

We’re so proud to have Lauren Pinkston :: Upwardly Dependent representing FBA on the global stage and inspiring change-makers across Europe and beyond. 🙌

"No matter how difficult your healing journey may look, you can only experience true inner healing by your ability to believe in yourself, your willingness to fight and your determination to become the best version of yourself." - Participant in the FBA's Survivor Wellness Workshop last week in NYC.

Human trafficking is a $230+ billion industry—an economic crime that demands economic solutions.

With 50 million people enslaved worldwide, those who are liberated or self-liberate face an alarming risk of re-exploitation without safe, stable employment.

That’s why we work globally to equip businesses with the tools and support they need to build healing-centered, psychologically safe workplaces - empowering them to create 100,000 secure, life-changing jobs for survivors by 2030.

Give now to help create more dignified opportunities to sustain freedom through work.
