On November 6, Lauris Liepa, Member of the Board of the University of Latvia Foundation (LU Foundation), met with members of the Toronto Latvian Pensioners’ Association (TLPA – Toronto Latvian Seniors).

During the meeting, he introduced the attendees to the work of the LU Foundation and encouraged them to get involved in supporting research at the University of Latvia.

The event also featured a presentation by Kaspars Ozoliņš, Latvia’s Ambassador to Canada, who spoke about Riga’s Art Nouveau architecture, as well as a delightful musical performance for the guests.

In a heartfelt and festive atmosphere, on the evening of November 5, the University of Latvia Foundation gathered the 2025/2026 academic year scholarship recipients and patrons.
During the celebration, we honored 114 LU Foundation scholarship recipients of this academic year and recognized the most generous patrons of 2025.

“Dear scholarship recipients! The LU Foundation scholarship is a recognition of your passion, an acknowledgment of your achievements, and a sign of trust in your future ambitions.
Today, you have joined a special community that unites hundreds of scholarship holders, patrons, and researchers.
From this day on, you are part of the family — those who care about their Alma Mater and who will shape Latvia’s future.

LU fonda vadītāja Zaiga Pūce un Latvijas Universitātes attīstības prorektors Enno Ence šonedēļ aizvada vizīti ASV. Tās ietvaros viesojās Prinstonas Universitātē (Princeton University, kur tikās ar augstskolas Attīstības viceprezidenta vietnieku lielo ziedojumu jomā Stīvu Steiplu (Steve Staples, Assistant Vice President for Development, Principal Gifts) un ikgadējās ziedojumu kampaņas organizatoru – attīstības viceprezidenta vietnieku Šonu P. Brenanu (Sean P. Brennan, Associate Vice President for Developemnt).

Prinstonas Universitāte var lepoties ar vislielāko absolventu iesaisti – ik gadu tai ziedo 60% bijušo studentu. Tikšanās laikā LU pārstāvji tika iepazīstināti ar ziedojumu piesaistes stratēģiju, kā arī izaicinājumiem, ar ko saskaras Alumni programmas īstenošanā. Tāpat šī bija pirmā vizīte, kurai sekos ciešāka sadarbība arī noteiktās zinātnes jomās starp abām universitātēm.

Latvijas uzņēmēju delegācijas aptuveni 50 cilvēku sastāvā ekonomikas ministra Viktora Valaiņa vadībā organizē Latvijas Investīciju un attīstības aģentūra - LIAA. Tās ietvaros no 13. līdz 17.oktobrim delegācija piedalījās vienā no lielākajām aizsardzības industrijas izstādēm "AUSA Annual Meeting & Exposition", kā arī Latvijas-Amerikas Tirdzniecības un Rūpniecības Kameras (LACC) konferencē "Spotlight Latvia".

This week, Zaiga Pūce, Director of the University of Latvia Foundation, and Enno Ence, Vice-Rector for Development of the University of Latvia, are conducting a working visit to the United States.

As part of the visit, they met at Princeton University with Steve Staples, Assistant Vice President for Development, Principal Gifts, and Sean P. Brennan, Associate Vice President for Development, who leads the university’s annual giving campaign.

Princeton University proudly boasts one of the highest alumni participation rates in the world — 60% of its graduates contribute annually. During the meeting, LU representatives were introduced to Princeton’s fundraising strategy and the challenges faced in implementing its alumni engagement programs. This visit marks the beginning of closer collaboration between the two universities, including potential cooperation in specific areas of research.

The visit takes place within the framework of a Latvian business delegation of around 50 participants, led by Minister of Economics Viktors Valainis and organized by the Investment and Development Agency of Latvia (LIAA). From October 13–17, the delegation participated in one of the world’s largest defense industry events — the AUSA Annual Meeting & Exposition — as well as in the Latvian-American Chamber of Commerce (LACC) conference “Spotlight Latvia.”

2. septembrī ar ASV fotogrāfa Deivida Berneta (David Burnett) uzstāšanos “Politikas zinātnes studenta ceļš līdz pasaules līderu fotogrāfam” aizsākās LU fonda lekciju cikls “Akadēmiskie lasījumi”.

Pēc LU fonda iniciatīvas, Rīgā viesojās viens no pēdējo simts gadu nozīmīgākajiem britu zinātniekiem – Oksfordas Universitātes profesorus Čārlzs Spenss (Charles Spence).

2. oktobrī viņa lekcija “Maņu saistījumi laikā un telpā, to ietekme uz zinātni, mākslu un dizainu” Latvijas Universitātes Lielajā aulā pulcēja ļoti plašu interesentu loku. Vizītes laikā profesors Spenss sniedza vairākas intervijas Latvijas medijiem, tostarp Latvijas Radio 1 raidījumam “Brīvības bulvāris”. ⬇️

At the initiative of the University of Latvia Foundation, one of the most influential British scientists of the past century – Professor Charles Spence of the University of Oxford – visited Riga.

On October 2, his lecture “The Correspondences: Connecting the Senses across Time and Space, Implications for Science, Art, & Design” filled the Great Hall of the University of Latvia with a remarkably large and diverse audience.

During his visit, Professor Spence gave several interviews to Latvian media, including Latvian Radio programme “Brīvības bulvāris” (“Freedom Boulevard”).

Pēc LU fonda iniciatīvas 5. septembrī Latvijas Universitātes Cietvielu fizikas institūts viesojās LU fonda mecenāts Māris Lapiņš. Viņu pavadīja LU fonda vadītāja Zaiga Pūce un Prof. Ivars Lācis. Savukārt no LU CFI puses viesus uzņēma direktors Andris Anspoks.

Tikšanās laikā tika apspriesta sadarbība infrastruktūras attīstības nolūkos, kāpinot pētniecības iespējas mikrofluīdikas jomā. LU CFI pārstāvji stāstīja par institūtā izmatoto open access – atvērtās piekļuves stratēģiju savās laboratorijās.

Viesi varēja aplūkot zinātnieku darbu ar mikro un nano struktūrām, kā arī tuvāk iepazīt mikrofluīdikas čipu izgatavošanu.

On 5 September, UL Foundation’s patron Māris Lapiņš, Director of UL Foundation Zaiga Pūce, and Prof. Ivars Lācis visited the UL Institute of Solid State Physics (UL ISSP). The guests were welcomed by Director of UL ISSP Andris Anspoks.

The participants of the visit discussed cooperation in infrastructure development, expanding research opportunities in the field of microfluidics. Representatives of the UL ISSP spoke about the open access strategy of the institute and its implementation in their laboratories, including the need for a new device – the purchase of a surface profilometer.

“Latvia spends about four times less of its gross domestic product on science than Estonia does. This shows that the two countries have different priorities,” said Professor Mārcis Auziņš, a member of the board of the University of Latvia Foundation, in the TV3 Latvija program 900 Seconds.

Importantly, patrons’ contributions play a significant role in the development of science. In the academic field, this support is unique—especially when it comes to acquiring equipment, which is often impossible to fund through state or EU projects.

Thanks to the support of University of Latvia Foundation patrons such as MikroTik, researchers at the University of Latvia have been able to strengthen their research capacity over the years.

On July 10, the UL Foundation participated in the World Latvian Economics and Innovation Forum 👀

Within the framework of the forum, the UL Foundation was one of the supporters, expressing gratitude for the significant contribution of diaspora patrons to the development of Latvian higher education.

On July 9, the Mākslas muzejs RĪGAS BIRŽA hosted a reception organized by the Pasaules Brīvo latviešu apvienība, during which Baiba Ebuliņa, the Chairwoman of the Board of the UL Foundation, welcomed all those present, emphasizing the great importance of education in the development of the country. 👏

Meanwhile, on July 11, representatives of the UL Foundation Board Baiba Ebuliņa, Lauris Liepa and the Foundation Director Zaiga Pūce met at a business lunch with three Honorary Consuls of Latvia in the USA and Australia – Laura Ramana, Uldis Sīpolas, Imants Kīnas, as well as with two high-caliber professionals in their field from the USA – technology expert in artificial intelligence and engineering Edgars Kalnas and CEO of IONCOR Roberts Ābelis. The lunch was also attended by P. Blumbergs and Mārtiņš Andersons – Chairman of the Board of the LU Foundation's representative office in the USA "Friends of the University of Latvia".

The conversation discussed the cooperation between the UL Foundation, the university and the diaspora not only in attracting donations, but also in transferring knowledge. 🥳

Congratulations to University of Latvia student Betija Rubene, who has received the Jura Kalnavārna Excellence Award of 5000 euros for outstanding achievements in her master's thesis. 👏

Betija's chosen topic on the research of wild bees in Latvia was recognized as the best master's thesis in the UL STEM field. 🐝

The award was given for her master's work titled “High-Resolution National Scale Species Distribution Modeling: Workflow and Result Interpretation for Bees (Hymenoptera: Anthophila)”.

💭 “In childhood, I was interested in insects, and while studying at Jelgava State Gymnasium, I focused on biology, but I was more involved in ornithology at that time. When I started my studies at LU, it seemed that I could return to the topic of insects, starting with wasps, but later I also became passionate about other wild bees. Now they are my main research area,” Rubene explains.
