A little free publicity for our bayou in a mosaic path at Smither Park, in SE Houston. A tremendous long-term art project by the Orange Show. That’s the same organization that will be hosting the art car parade this coming weekend.

A FUN AFTERNOON AT THE PRAIRIE !!!

We want to give a big thank you to everyone who came out to the West 11th Street Pocket Prairie for WOBA’s Meet Your Native Neighbors event on Sunday!

We thoroughly enjoyed learning more about the pocket prairie’s establishment and the many benefits native plants provide to the health of the White Oak Watershed and the surrounding community. We were grateful for a beautiful sunny day and for attendees who are passionate about their neighborhood and eager to learn, connect, and get involved.

Attendees enjoyed food, coffee, and hot chocolate (shoutout to Blacksmith for the coffee donation!) while hearing from Immediate Past President of WOBA, Mark Steuer; representatives from Houston Parks Board and Bayou Preservation Association; and guest speaker Ilya Martinalbo, native plant expert and vice president of the Texas Master Naturalist Gulf Coast Chapter. Guests also had the opportunity to explore the pocket prairie and use iNaturalist to identify common native species.

The afternoon was a celebration of citizen science, shared knowledge, and community connection, highlighting how small green spaces like pocket prairies play a big role in supporting biodiversity and protecting the White Oak Watershed.

We’re so thankful to everyone who joined us and helped make this event such a success, and we look forward to seeing you at future WOBA events!

Great to have Houston Audubon at the White Oak Bayou Association's Annual Meeting!

Houston Audubon had a great time at the White Oak Bayou Association's annual meeting at the Historic Heights Fire Station. We were among fellow organizations and community members invested in making Houston a greener and more resilient city for all. Attendees were treated to an engaging presentation on sustainability by Dr. Lisa Morano, professor and director of the Center for Urban Agriculture and Sustainability at UHD.

Thank you to everyone who attended last week’s White Oak Bayou Association’s Annual Meeting. Your efforts and support made our 37th Annual Meeting a great one. We could not do it without the support of so many local organizations who show up to share their missions and interact with other groups wanting to make our community a better one. We especially wish to thank our keynote speaker, Professor Lisa Morano of the University of Houston Downtown, who talked about bayou health and sustainability, as well as student speaker Jazmin Perez, who provided some interesting insights into her work with the Texas Stream Team.
